Lowell, Mass. (April 9) -- The Saint Anselm
softball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 games to UMass Lowell
on Wednesday afternoon in conference play. The Hawks fell in game
one by a 12-2 final before losing a 10-4 game in the second contest
of the twinbill.
In game one, a nine-run third inning sank the Hawks as the
Riverhawks hammered out 10 hits in the game. Jaclyn
Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with two runs batted
in to lead the attack. Sophomore pitcher Katie Corey
(Weymouth, Mass.) gave up 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings to
take the loss for Saint Anselm. In game two, the Riverhawks took a
10-0 lead heading into the fifth inning before a grand slam by
Theresa Foley (Byfield, Mass.) kept the Hawks in
the game and accounted for the 10-4 final score. Lisa
Caruso (Granby, Conn.) took the loss for Saint
Anselm, giving up eight earned runs in four innings pitched.
Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) and Megan
Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) each had two hits for the Hawks
in the defeat.
With the loss, Saint Anselm falls to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in
Northeast-10 play. The Hawks are back in action on Thursday
afternoon as the team takes on Saint Rose for a doubleheader
beginning at 3:30 p.m. The twinbill is the home opener for the
Hawks.
