Manchester, N.H. (April 10) -- In the team's
home opener on Thursday, the Saint Anselm softball earned a split
with visiting Saint Rose to improve to 8-8 overall and 2-4 in
league play. The Hawks took game two by a 4-3 final but fell in
game one, 7-1. Saint Rose is now 7-13 overall and 4-6 in the
Northeast-10.
In game one, the Golden Knights jumped on top in the top of the
first with an RBI double by Amanda Morano (Highland,
N.Y.) that scored starting pitcher Kristen Calahan
(LaGrange, N.Y.). Saint Anselm answered right back though
in the bottom of the inning when Brittney Birch (Bradford,
Mass.) scored on an RBI single by Jackie Giannino
(Beverly, Mass.). Birch reached after leading off the
inning with a triple. Saint Rose took the lead for good in the
third with a pair of runs and sealed the win with a three-run
fourth that was keyed by a two-RBI hit up the middle by
Cara Piccarretto (Rochester, N.Y.). The Golden
Knights added a run in the sixth to account for the 7-1 final.
Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for
the Hawks, while Calahan picked up the victory for Saint Rose.
In game two, Morano got Saint Rose started right away with a
two-RBI double to left that scored Jessica Pastore (East
Greenbush, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Cullen (Rochester,
N.Y.) for the quick 2-0 lead. Saint Anselm came back as
Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.) doubled in
Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) in the third.
Julie Beaudry (Worcester, Mass.) singled in
Krista Merrill (Portland, Maine), pinch running
for Megan Lemire (Worcerster, Mass.), who had
reached on a double earlier, in the fourth.
McCabe made a defensive gem in the fifth inning, as Saint Rose
had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth. McCabe made a
diving catch on a line drive, and flipped the ball to Liz
LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) at second for the double play, and
got the Hawks out of the inning with no damage.
The Hawks tacked on a run in the sixth to go ahead 3-2, as Birch
doubled in Raylyn Glavin (Saugus, Mass.), who was
pinch running for Beaudry, who had reached on a walk to open the
inning. Saint Rose responded with a run in the top of the seventh,
as Pastore singled to bring in Kerry Monahan (East Meadow,
N.Y.).
The Hawks ended the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of
the seventh. With two outs, LeBrun tripled to right on a shot into
the gap. Lemire's line drive single brought in LeBrun, as the Hawks
captured the 4-3 victory. Katie Corey (Weymouth,
Mass.) picked up the win on the hill for the Hawks in
relief of starting pitcher Lisa Caruso (Granby,
Conn.).Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg,
N.Y.) had the tough-luck loss for Saint Rose.
Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday, April 12th as the
team travels to Pace for a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at
Noon in Pleasantville, N.Y.
