Manchester, N.H. (April 30) -
The Saint Anselm baseball team dropped its final regular season
game on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Merrimack at Sullivan
Park. The loss ends Saint Anselm's season at 15-28 overall, 11-19
in Northeast-10 play. The win improves Merrimack to 17-24 overall,
12-14 in league play.
The Warriors jumped on the board in the first with a pair of
runs. Mike Dooling's (Milford, Conn.) single
brought in Jeff Bercume (Leicester, Mass.) and
Brendan Pyburn (Peabody, Mass.).
After not picking up a hit through the first five innings, the
Hawks cut the lead in half in the sixth with a pair of doubles.
Evan Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) doubled to
lead-off the inning, while T.J. Bowler (Pittsfield,
Mass.) doubled later in the inning to bring in
Kelleher.
The Hawks threatened in the seventh, as Ryan Gargan
(Byfield, Mass.) singled and reached third base with two
outs. A bare-handed play from Mike Andre (Medford,
Mass.) on a weak ground ball preserved the one-run lead
for the Warriors.
The Warriors picked up a run in the bottom of the inning, taking
back the two-run lead. Pyburn's infield single with one out scored
Andre, who had singled to lead-off the inning.
The Warriors picked up another single run in the eighth, as
pinch-runner Mike Savastano (Salem, N.H.) scored
on a fielder's choice securing the 4-1 victory for the Warriors.
Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.) took the loss
for the Hawks, dropping his record to 4-3. Barese tossed seven
innings allowing four runs, three earned, while giving up eight
hits and picking up a trio of strikeouts.
Ryan O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the
win for the Warriors, improving his record to 5-4. O'Rourke did not
allow a hit through the first five innings, allowed just one run on
four hits and struck out 10 through eight innings. Chris
Smith (Canton, Mass.) came in to pick up the save,
throwing a perfect ninth inning with three ground outs, all to
second base.
The Hawks end their season with a 4-1 loss to Merrimack on
Wednesday afternoon at Sullivan Park.
