Manchester, N.H. (April 24) -- The softball
team split a doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire played at the
South Athletic Fields on Thursday afternoon. Behind a strong
pitching performance from Katie Corey (Weymouth,
Mass.), the Hawks took game one, 3-0. The Penmen bounced
back in the second game though, and took the nightcap 11-2.
In game one, the Hawks got on top in the first, as Megan
Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) singled to center to bring in
Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.). The Hawks struck
for another single run in the third when Nicole Baginski
(Beverly, Mass.) doubled in Birch and the Hawks tacked on
the final run of the game in the fourth as Katherine
Theodorou's (Glen Cove, N.Y.) single brought in
pinch-runner, Krista Merrill (Portland, Maine).
Lemire and Theodorou both finished the game 2-for-3 with an
RBI as the only two Hawks with a multi-hit game. Corey got
out jams in the fourth and the sixth, as she induced a
ground out back to herself with runners on second and third with
two outs in the fourth. With runners on second and third in the
sixth, Corey picked up a strikeout for the second out and then
induced a ground out to shortstop, Liz LeBrun (Rowley,
Mass.). Corey finished the game allowing just four hits
while picking up three strikeouts.
In game two, the Penmen got the bats going in the first inning
striking for five runs. Ashley Bernstein's (Stoughton,
Mass.) single brought home two runs, while Valerie
Martins (Somerset, Mass.) scored on the next play on a
fielding error. Melissa Pessotti (Burlington,
Mass.) brought home a run to make it 4-0, while
Laurie Boland (Worcester, Mass.) brought home the
final run of the inning with a single. The Hawks got a single run
back in the second when Moira McCabe (Brookline,
N.H.) singled to bring in Jaclyn Giannino
(Beverly, Mass.). The Penmen picked up two more runs in
the third though, as Ashley Guertin (Manchester,
N.H.) and Boland picked up RBIs in the inning. The Hawks
added a run to cut the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the inning when
LeBrun's RBI single brought in Baginski, but it was all the Hawks
mustered for offense in the second game. Southern New Hampshire
went on to pick up four more runs over the next two innings to
polish off the Hawks, 11-2.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, hosting Le Moyne for a
twin-bill starting at 3 p.m. at the South Athletic Fields.
