Manchester, N.H. (April 25) -- On Friday
afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team dropped a doubleheader to
league-leading Le Moyne College. The Hawks fell by a 10-2 final in
game one before dropping a 6-2 score in the second game. The losses
drop the Hawks to 19-16-1 overall, 13-12-1 in Northeast-10 play.
The sweep now puts Le Moyne on a 13-game winning streak, with the
Dolphins standing at 34-8, 21-1 in league play.
In game one, the Dolphins jumped on the board quickly, taking a
4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Caitlin
O'Neill's RBI single brought in Danielle
VanGorder to open the scoring, while Emma
Murphy's RBI single brought home Sarah
Reed to put the Dolphins up 2-0. Jennifer
Farrelly brought home a run with a single, while
Kimberlee Baker's ground out to second brought
home another run. The Dolphins then tacked on a single run in the
top of the second to take a 5-0 lead, as VanGorder doubled home
Bailey Phillips. The Hawks got one back in the
bottom of the inning with Moira McCabe's (Brookline,
N.H.) sacrifice fly. The Dolphins went on to pick up three
more runs in the fourth, capped off by Murphy's sacrifice fly to
take an 8-1 lead. The Hawks got a single run back in the bottom of
the inning with McCabe's second RBI of the game, a single to bring
in Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.). The Dolphins
held the Hawks off the board for the next three inning though, and
picked up two more runs to secure the 10-2 victory.
Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.), Julie
Beaudry (Worcester, Mass.), and McCabe finished with two
hits each for the Hawks.
In game two, the Hawks took an early 2-1 lead after one inning,
benefitting from a pair of Le Moyne errors. On a dropped pop-up to
the second baseman with the bases loaded, Nicole Baginski
(Beverly, Mass.) and Katherine Theodorou (Glen
Cove, N.Y.) both scored. The two runs were all the Hawks
put together in the second game though, as the Dolphins scored four
runs in the second and a single run in the sixth to take home the
6-2 win. The Hawks only mustered three hits off Dolphin starter,
Jenna Vanacore, who finished the game with 5.2
innings pitched, allowing two unearned runs while picking up eight
strikeouts along the way.
Saint Anselm returns to the diamond tomorrow, hosting Southern
Connecticut for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the South Athletic
Fields.
