Hawks, Bulldogs Battle in 20-Inning Twinbill

Smithfield, R.I. (April 22) -- In a pair of marathon games on Tuesday afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team dropped game one by a 1-0 final in 10 innings and tied game two at 7-7 as the game was called due to darkness.

In game one, both teams struggled to get the offense going as the game stayed scoreless until the 10th inning. Bryant stranded runners on second and third in the first, as that was the only runner that reached third for either team through the first seven innings. Bryant's starting pitcher, Janine Enos, had her no-hitter broken up in the sixth on a Theresa Foley (Byfield, Mass.) double to lead off the inning, but Foley was stranded at second. The Hawks had a two-out double in the seventh from Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.), but the runner was stranded on second again. Bryant ended the game with an RBI-single from Anne Dobmeier in the bottom of the tenth. Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) had a gutsy performance in the tough-luck loss, throwing 9.1 innings and allowing eight hits with four strikeouts. Enos was brilliant in the win for the Bulldogs, allowing just five hits and striking out 13 along the way in a complete game performance.

In game two, both teams opened up the scoring after four scoreless innings of play. After going down 1-0 in the fifth, the Hawks posted three runs in the sixth with a Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) three-run homer. Bryant tied it up in the bottom of the seventh though, to send the second game into extra innings as well. After two scoreless innings, the Hawks posted four runs. Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) had an RBI-single to put the Hawks up 4-3. Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) then singled in McCabe. Back-to-back doubles from Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.) and Foley to score two more runs. The Bulldogs came storming back with four runs in the bottom of the inning though, as the game was called due to darkness following the final out of the 10th inning.

The Hawks are back in action on Thursday, hosting Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m.
