Smithfield, R.I. (April 19) -- On Saturday
afternoon at Bulldog Stadium, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team
dropped a 19-7 final to No. 5 ranked Bryant University in
Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Hawks came out strong in the first period behind a pair of
goals from Mike McClain (Milton, Mass.) and four
straight scores to end the period as the visitors held a 5-2 edge
after the opening quarter. Bryant answered back with four
unanswered goals in the second quarter and took a 6-5 lead into the
halftime break. Matt McKeefrey scored twice in
that quarter, including with 45 seconds left in the half to give
Bryant the lead for good.
The Bulldogs continued to pour it on throughout the third
quarter, outscoring Saint Anselm by a 7-1 margin in the period and
outshooting the Hawks 15-3 during that time. Bryant pushed the lead
to 16-6 with 8:18 remaining before Saint Anselm Steve
Trocki (Braintree, Mass.) scored a man-up goal with 6:59
left to complete his hat trick for the day. Bryant added three late
goals for the 19-7 final.
Dan Flynn (Wakefield, Mass.) got the start in
net for the Hawks and took the loss after making 15 saves in 50:32
of play. Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) played the final
9:28 with three saves and four goals against. Michael
Kennedy made eight saves to get the win for the Bulldogs.
Saint Anselm now sits at 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the
Northeast-10, while the Bulldogs are 11-3 overall and 8-1 in
league play. The Hawks are back in action on Sunday afternoon as
the team hosts Franklin Pierce for a 4 p.m. start at Melucci Field.
