Worcester, Mass. (April 13) -- On Sunday
afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team earned a sweep of
Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Hawks won
each game in the final inning as the team took game one by an 11-7
score after a four-run ninth and rallied with two runs in the
seventh inning for a 12-11 victory in game two. Saint Anselm has
now won four of its last five games to move to two games over .500.
In the first game, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second
inning as Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) scored
on a sacrifice fly by Julie Beaudry (Worcester,
Mass.) and Nicole Baginski (Beverly,
Mass.) came home on an RBI single up the middle by
sophomore Theresa Foley (Byfield, Mass.).
Assumption came roaring back in the bottom of the inning with five
hits, including a home run by Ashley Bilodeau (Manchester,
Conn.), to key a five-run inning and a 5-2 lead.
Saint Anselm scored three times in the top of the third though,
including a two-run homer by freshman Liz LeBrun (Rowley,
Mass.) and an RBI single to right center by Beaudry that
scored Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.). The teams
traded runs before heading to extra innings, where in the ninth the
Hawks came up with four runs to pick up the win. The four-run
explosion was led by a homer with one out by Lemire, along with a
two-RBI single through the left side by Foley. Sophomore
Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) went the distance
for the Hawks, giving up 15 hits and seven runs in nine innings
with two strikeouts.
Game two was even more high scoring as the Hawks took a quick
2-0 lead in the first, led by RBI hits from Baginski and McCabe.
Assumption tied the game with two runs in each of the first two
innings, including a two-RBI single up the middle by Meghan
DiVitto (Milford, Mass.) in the first and a two-run
homer from Amy Gordon (Seekonk, Mass.) in the
second. After the Greyhounds regained the lead in the fourth at
6-4, Saint Anselm answered again with a six-run fifth inning to
take a 10-6 lead. That rally was helped by a two-run blast over the
left center field fence by freshman Kayla McEachern
(Stoneham, Mass.) and a three-RBI double by LeBrun.
Assumption came right back to take an 11-10 lead in the fifth
before a two-RBI single up the middle by Baginski gave the Hawks
the lead for good in the top of the seventh. Lemire picked up the
win for Saint Anselm, going six innings.
Saint Anselm improves to 11-9 overall and 5-5 in Northeast-10
play, while Assumption now sits at 9-11 overall and is 3-7 in
league action. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 15th
as the Hawks host cross-state rival Franklin Pierce for a 3 p.m.
twinbill.
