Manchester, N.H. (April 15) -- On Tuesday
afternoon, the Saint Anselm softball team earned a split with New
Hampshire rival Franklin Pierce. The Hawks dropped game one by a
5-3 final before rebounding in the nightcap with a 4-2 victory.
In game one, the Ravens jumped on top first by a 2-0 margin in
the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Emily Griffin
(Leominster, Mass.) scored the Ravens first run on a
passed ball, followed by a heads up play Elaine Matthews
(Roslindale, Mass.), who came home from third on a stolen
base attempt by teammate Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley,
N.Y.).
Saint Anselm answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a
three-run outburst to take the lead for the first time. The big
blast in the inning came in the form of a two-RBI triple to right
center by Moira McCabe (Brookline, N.H.) that
scored Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) and
Jackie Giannino (Beverly, Mass.). The Hawks added
the go-ahead run as McCabe came home on a single up the middle from
Kayla McEachern (Stoneham, Mass.).
The Hawks held the 3-2 lead into the sixth inning before Tracy
blasted a shot over the left centerfield fence to tie the game up
at 3-3. The Ravens took the lead on an RBI groundout to short by
Kelsey Dumont (Swanton, Vt.) and added an
insurance run on an RBI single to right by Erin Clark (Fort
Ann, N.Y.). FPU starter Kayla Johnson (Hudson,
N.H.) set the Hawks down in order in the seventh to pick
up the win. Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) went the
distance for the Hawks in the defeat.
In the second game, the Hawks jumped on top right away as a
single up the middle by junior Katherine Theodorou (Glen
Cove, N.Y.) scored Brittney Birch (Bradford,
Mass.) for the early 1-0 lead. In the third the lead got
pushed to 2-0 as Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) fired
a double off the fence in left field to score Theodorou. The Hawks
added another pair in the fourth as Giannino came home on a wild
pitch and a single to right center by Birch scored Julie
Beaudry (Worcester, Mass.) with the team's fourth run of
the game. In the seventh, FPU's Stephanie Howard (Norwalk,
Conn.) led off with a triple to right and came home on a
Hawk error to get on the board. After a double by Clark, she came
home on double to left from Griffin to close the Ravens to within
4-2 with two outs in the inning. A groundout back to Lemire ended
the game for the Hawks to earn the split.
Lemire picked up the win for the Hawks, while Caitlin
Beagan (Warwick, R.I.) took the loss for Franklin Pierce.
Saint Anselm is now 12-10 overall and 6-6 in NE-10 play, while
the Ravens now sit at 4-23 overall and 3-11 in league action. The
Hawks are back in action on Wednesday afternoon as the team travels
to Saint Michael's for a 3:30 p.m. start.
