Hawks Win in 10th Over SNHU

Manchester, N.H. (April 13) -- The Saint Anselm baseball team avoided a series sweep from Southern New Hampshire, winning Sunday's match-up 6-4 in the 10th inning. The Hawks and Penmen played to two extra inning games over the weekend. Ryan O'Rourke (Norwood, Mass.) led the Hawks with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, picking up a pair of RBIs. The win improves the Hawks to 11-18, 7-11 in Northeast-10 play. The Penmen drop to 6-21, 4-15 in conference play.

The Hawks picked up a single run in the second as Jimmy Garrigan's (Plymouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly brought in Ryan Gargan (Byfield, Mass.), who had walked to open the inning.

Southern New Hampshire took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. The Penmen took advantage of control woes from Hawks' starting pitcher, Nick Barese (Braintree, Mass.). After three walks in the inning, Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI single, and then Jeff Giannino (Beverly, Mass.) singled home Skyler Byrd (Milford, N.H.).

The Hawks took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Matt Sucharewicz (Peabody, Mass.) had an RBI double down the right field line to score Gargan to take the 3-2 lead, while O'Rourke brought home his first RBI of the game later in the inning to push the lead to 4-2.

The Penmen made it a tie ball game in the seventh, as Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly and Timothy Rines (Northfield, N.H.) walked with the bases loaded to tie the game at four.

With the game sent into extra innings, Ben Gunn (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) reached on an error in the 10th to score Hussey to put the Hawks up 5-4. O'Rourke then had his second RBI of the game later in the inning to give the Hawks an insurance run.

Barese threw 6.2 innings allowing five hits and four runs, three earned, walking six and striking out three in a no-decision.  Mike O'Rourke (Norwood, Mass.) picked up the win in relief to improve his record to 2-1, only allowing one hit over 2.1 innings of work, walking three and picking up a strikeout. Garrigan picked up his first save of the season, working a hitless 10th inning, allowing just one runner on a walk.

The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Bentley at 3:30 p.m. at Sullivan Park.
