Hawks Earn Split With Bentley

Waltham, Mass. (April 1) -- After dropping a 4-1 final in game one, the Saint Anselm softball team pulled off a split with Bentley on Tuesday afternoon with an 11-7 victory in game two of the twinbill.

In game one, Bentley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Hawks tied the game on an RBI triple to right center by first baseman Nicole Baginski (Beverly, Mass.) that scored Katherine Theodorou (Glen Cove, N.Y.). Bentley added a run in the fourth to regain the lead and sealed the game with two in the fifth inning for the 4-1 final. Theodorou led the Hawks with a 3-for-3 showing with one run scored. Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) went 4.2 innings, scattering five hits with four runs and three walks to pick up the loss. Ashley Messina went seven innings for the Falcons, giving up six hits and one run with four strikeouts for the win.

In the nightcap, it was Saint Anselm that jumped out to the quick 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. The Falcons answered with four runs to take the 5-3 lead before the Hawks tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth on a wild pitch that scored Krista Merrill (Portland, Maine) and an RBI single by junior catcher Brittney Birch (Bradford, Mass.). After Bentley regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth by a 7-5 margin, the Hawks exploded for a five-run sixth and added a single run in the seventh for the win. The five-run outburst was keyed by a two-RBI double by Theodorou, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI in game two. Megan Lemire (Worcester, Mass.) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI, while Liz LeBrun (Rowley, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Lemire started the game for the Hawks, going 3.1 innings pitched. After Lisa Caruso (Granby, Conn.) threw 1.1 innings, Corey came in and closed it out in the final 2.1 innings for the victory.

The Hawks are back in action on Thursday, April 3rd when the team travels to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Colchester, Vt.
