Old Westbury, N.Y. (March 8) -- After scoring
five unanswered goals midway through the game to briefly take an
8-7 lead, the Saint Anselm men's lacrosse team dropped a 17-11
final to No. 2 ranked NYIT on Saturday afternoon in non-conference
play.
The Hawks fell behind by a 6-3 margin with 6:13 left in the
second quarter before scoring five times in a span of 8:44,
including three straight to start the third quarter, to take an 8-6
lead. Matt Surette (Wakefield, Mass.) scored
just 44 seconds into the third to tie the game, followed by another
Surette goal to take the lead and a goal from Mike McClain
(Milton, Mass.) for the 8-6 margin. NYIT pushed the lead
to 10-8 with 9:04 left in the third before Justin Hall
(Sudbury, Mass.) notched his second goal of the contest to
get Saint Anselm back within one at 10-9. NYIT scored the next four
goals though to cement the victory.
Saint Anselm was led by three goals from Surette, along with two
each from Steve Trocki (Braintree, Mass.) and
McClain. Keith Henderson led NYIT with eight
goals, including six in the second half.
Pat Acone (Bow, N.H.) turned aside nine shots
for the Hawks in the loss. Dan Goosk picked up the
win for NYIT with one save in 25:41 of play. Chris
Powers got the start and made seven saves and allowed
eight goals in 34:19 of play.
Saint Anselm falls to 2-2 overall, while NYIT now stands at 3-0
on the season. The Hawks are back in action on Saturday, March 15th
as the team hosts Saint Michael's for a 1 p.m. start. That game is
scheduled to take place at Manchester West High School.
