Sloatsburg, N.Y. (March 6) -- The women's
lacrosse team opened its 2008 campaign with a 16-9 victory over
Saint Thomas Aquinas. The win puts the Hawks at 1-0, while the loss
puts Saint Thomas Aquinas at 0-1.
The Hawks opened scoring at the 4:41 mark in the first quarter,
with Meghan Ayers (Sayville, N.Y.) netting the
Hawks' first goal of the season, assisted by Beth Millian
(Arlington, Mass.). Courtney Ford (Concord,
Mass.) then made it 2-0 at the 6:15 mark. Saint Thomas
Aquinas cut the lead in half at the 8:44 mark, when
Maryanne Kugler scored, assisted by Aime
Colon.
The Hawks made it 5-1 with Ford picking up another goal,
assisted by Millian. Michaela Rocha (Rye, N.H.)
scored at the 11:23 mark, while Ford made it three goals in the
game at the 12:13 mark. Colon made it 5-2 with a goal at the 13:42
mark, assisted by Kim DeLorenzo.
The Hawks went on a six-goal streak though to extend the lead to
11-2. During the stretch, Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord,
Mass.) picked up a goal, assisted by Rocha, while Rocha
had a pair of goals. Jennifer Carew (Concord,
N.H.) got in on the action with her first goal of the
season, while Ford scored her fourth goal of the contest at the
26:20 mark to end the run. DeLorenzo scored a goal to cut the lead
to 11-3 before going into the half.
Saint Thomas Aquinas scored a pair of goals early to with
DeLorenzo and Katelyn McDonough scoring,
shortening the Hawks lead to 11-5. After a Kurlowecz goal at the
4:03 mark to put the Hawks up 12-5, neither team scored again until
the 17:29 mark. Carew added her second goal of the game, assisted
by Emily Traicoff (Beverly, Mass.). Ayers added
her second goal of the game to put the Hawks up 14-5.
Colon scored at the 20:37 mark, but the Hawks responded with
Millian scoring at the 24:13 mark to go up 15-6. Two Saint Thomas
Aquinas goals from Jennifer Bruen and
Summer Terpak brought Saint Thomas Aquinas within
seven, but Ford scored at the 29:01 mark to give the Hawks a 16-8
lead. Terpak scored a late goal at the 29:17 mark, but the Hawks
came away with the 16-9 victory.
Katherine O'Hara (Norwell, Mass.) made eight
saves in her college debut for the Hawks, while Sheila
Withey (Las Vegas, Nev.) made two saves in her college
debut for the Hawks in replacement of O'Hara late in the game.
The Hawks are back on the field tomorrow, taking on Molloy at 3
p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
