Manchester, N.H. (March 29) -- Despite a
six-goal performance from Michaela Rocha (Rye,
N.H.), the Saint Anselm women's lacrosse team dropped a
13-9 final to Bentley at Southern New Hampshire's Athletic Complex.
The loss drops the Hawks to 2-5, 1-3 Northeast-10. The win improves
the Falcons to 3-3, 2-2 in league play.
The Falcons came out strong scoring five straight goals to open
the game. Beth Gendron (Tyngsboro, Mass.) opened
the scoring at the 26:48 mark, scoring her 11th goal of the season.
Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill.) then struck at
the 25:50 mark, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Leigh
Tedeschi (Duxbury, Mass.) then pushed the lead to 3-0 at
the 22:10 mark, assisted by Griffin. Griffin then scored her second
goal of the game and her 15th of the season at the 19:48 mark.
Gendron then pocketed her second goal of the game at the 18:01
mark, assisted by Griffin, as the Falcons took a commanding 5-0
lead just 12 minutes into the game.
The Hawks came storming back with four straight goals of their
own though to get back within one. Rocha scored all four goals
during the stretch, with the goal at the 16:29 mark assisted by
Tiea Kurlowecz (Concord, Mass.), the goals at the
10:16 mark and the 4:53 mark both unassisted, and the final goal of
the stretch at the 1:09 mark was assisted by Beth Millian
(Arlington, Mass.).
Bentley added a late goal in the first half to take a 6-4 lead
into the second half. Erica de Silva (Dartmouth,
Mass.) netted her sixth goal of the season with just 44
seconds remaining in the half, assisted by Liz Goddard
(Acton, Mass.).
The Hawks came out and tied it up at six with two quick goals to
open the second half. Arden Lyons (Westford,
Mass.) scored just her second goal of the season at the
28:39 mark and Kurlowecz netted her sixth goal of the season at the
27:10 mark, as both goals were assisted by Millian.
Bentley took an 8-6 lead in the see-saw battle with back-to-back
goals from Goddard and Griffin at the 24:43 mark and the 22:24
mark, respectively. The Hawks got another goal from rookie phenom
Courtney Ford (Concord, Mass.) at the 20:22 mark
for her 17th goal of the season, assisted by Kurlowecz. Rocha then
scored her fifth goal of the game at the 12:11 mark to tie the game
up at eight off a free position shot.
Bentley went on a late tear however, scoring five straight goals
for the second time in the game. Gendron scored at the 8:32 mark,
then Griffin scored at the 7:32 mark, assisted by Tedeschi. Goddard
scored at the 5:04 mark off a free position shot, then Gendron
scored at the 4:13 mark. Tedeschi ended the run with her second
goal of the game at the 3:41 mark, assisted by Becca Woods
(Duxbury, Mass.), putting the Falcons up 13-8. Rocha added
her sixth goal of the game with just nine seconds remaining in the
contest, assisted by Millian, to account for the Hawks' ninth and
final goal.
Freshman goaltender Katie O'Hara (Norwell,
Mass.) made 15 saves, her highest save total so far this
season, to take the tough-luck loss for the Hawks.
Christina Guglielmo (Fair Haven, N.J.) made nine
saves for the Falcons to take the victory between the pipes.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, scheduled to host
Saint Michael's at 4 p.m.
