New Haven, Conn. (March 15) -- The baseball
team earned a split between two different teams on Saturday
afternoon, defeating Northeast-10 opponent Merrimack 2-1 just
hours after falling to non-conference opponent New Haven, 6-5. The
win improves the Hawks to 5-7, 1-0 Northeast-10. The loss drops
Merrimack to 0-5 on the year, 0-1 in conference.
The Hawks scored a single run in the top of the first, as
Adam Hussey (Danvers, Mass.) singled to left field
to lead-off the inning. After moving up on a past ball and a ground
ball to second, Hussey was on third with one out. Matt
Stone (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled him in to put the
Hawks up 1-0.
Saint Anselm starting pitcher, Nick Barese (Braintree,
Mass.), continued to hold the Warriors scoreless until the
sixth inning. After Brendan Pyburn (Peabody,
Mass.) tripled to open the inning, Jeff Bercume
(Leicester, Mass.) singled him in.
The Hawks added another single run in the top of the seventh
though to re-take the one-run lead. Matt Sucharewicz
(Peabody, Mass.), Evan Kelleher (Haverhill,
Mass.), and Eric Simm (Salem, N.H.)
singled in succession to load the bases with one out. Nick
Moreau (Manchester, N.H.) then reached on a fielder's
choice on a failed double play attempt, scoring Sucharewicz.
The two runs was all Barese needed, as he threw a complete game
five-hitter, allowing just one run and picking up nine strikeouts
to improve to 2-1 on the hill this season. Josh Sohn (West
Simsbury, Conn.) was the tough luck loser, throwing a
complete game of his own for the Warriors, allowing two runs on
eight hits with six punchouts.
The Hawks are back on the field tomorrow afternoon again in New
Haven, Conn., taking on Merrimack at 3:30 p.m.
