Manchester, N.H. (February 9) -- Joe
Fernald's (Braintree, Mass.) goal with just nine seconds
remaining in the game lifted the Hawks to a 3-2 victory over UMass
Boston Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks snap a
nine-game losing streak with the win and improve to 6-10-3, 2-10-3
in ECAC East play. The loss is UMass Boston's sixth-straight,
dropping the Beacons to 8-12-1, 3-11-1 in league play.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first period, thanks to goals
from Ted Economides (Bournedale, Mass.) and
Mike Foley (Medford, Mass.). Economides scored at
the 3:59 mark in the first frame, assisted by Ryan Butler
(Arlington, Mass.) and Brendan Carroll (Duxbury,
Mass.). Foley picked up his seventh goal of the
season at the 18:22 mark, assisted by Shane Masotta
(Woburn, Mass.) and John Penny (Andover,
Mass.).
UMass Boston charged back with two goals in the second
period to send the game into the third period knotted at two.
Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mo.) scored his ninth goal of
the season just 32 seconds into the period, assisted by
Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) and Kris
Kranzky (Glendora, Calif.). Vinnie Jacona (East
Stroudsburg, Pa.) then scored his second goal of the
season at the 13:14 mark to tie the game up, assisted by
Anthony Casmano (Wheaton, Ill.) and Dennis
Zak (Rockaway, N.J.).
After an evenly matched third period with shots on goal the same
at 11-10 in favor of UMass Boston, neither team appeared to have an
edge. Fernald scored with just nine seconds remaining in regulation
though to snap the Hawks' losing streak, assisted by Paul
Snell (Groton, Mass.) and Brian Hartigan (Saugus,
Mass.).
Pat Gallagher (Framingham, Mass.) made 25 saves
in his second win of the season, while Ryan Donovan
(Rexford, N.Y.) made 26 saves in the loss.
The Hawks return to the ice Tuesday, February 12th, hosting
cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 game at
7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
