Manchester, N.H. (February 24) -- The men's
hockey team saw its five-game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon
at Sullivan Arena, falling to Salem State, 4-2. Prior to the start
of the game, the five Saint Anselm seniors were recognized in their
last regular season home game. The win improves the Vikings to
14-10-1, 9-9-1 ECAC East. The loss finishes the Hawks ECAC East
league play, finishing the regular season 5-11-3 in ECAC East
action, while the loss drops their overall record to 10-11-3.
The Hawks jumped on the board first as Pat Forshner
(Natick, Mass.) found the back of the net for his third
goal in two games at the 12:03 mark, assisted by Colin
Fitzpatrick (Westwood, Mass.) and Brian Hartigan
(Saugus, Mass.). The goal was the only scoring in the
first period, as the Hawks took the 1-0 lead into the second
period.
The Vikings evened up the score 2:23 into the second period,
when Jeff Tellier (Chicopee, Mass.) scored,
assisted by Justin Fox (Whitby, Ontario) and
Mike Genovese (Hingham, Mass.). Neither the
Vikings nor the Hawks managed to score throughout the remainder of
the second frame, sending the game into the third period tied at
one.
The Hawks struck quickly into the third frame, as
Matthew Lowe (Stoughton, Mass.) picked up his
second goal of the season, assisted by Don Norris
(Glocester, R.I.) and Brendan Carroll (Duxbury,
Mass.). The 2-1 lead was short-lived though, as Salem
State responded just 1:47 later when David Pazzaglia
(Oakdale, Conn.) scored unassisted. Late in the period,
the Vikings took advantage of the power play, as Zach Doyen
(Ortonville, Mich.) picked up his eighth goal of the
season at the 16:20 mark, assisted by Genovese and Jamie
Cavanaugh (Scarborough, Canada). The Vikings added an
empty-netter to secure the victory, as Damen Nisula
(Gardner, Mass.) picked up the goal with just 37 seconds
remaining in the game. Kevin Huinink (Whitby,
Ontario) and Cavanaugh assisted on the goal.
The Hawks return to the ice for their final regular season game,
traveling to Stonehill in Easton, Mass. on Thursday, February 28th
for a Northeast-10 game at 6:50 p.m.
