Manchester, N.H. (February 16) -- Led by two
power-play goals in the second period, the Saint Anselm women's
hockey team defeated New England College by a 2-1 final on Saturday
afternoon at Sullivan Arena. The game was the final regular-season
home game for the Hawks as the 2008 Saint Anselm Senior Class was
honored prior to the game.
After a scoreless first period where both teams came out slowly,
the Hawks struck first on the power play in the second
period as senior All-American Cindy Lebel (Greenville,
Maine) notched her fifth goal of the season for the 1-0
lead. The goal was set up by a pass to Lebel in front of the net
from Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.). Just 3:26
later, Sarah Tracey (Aurora, Ontario) evened
things up at 1-1 with her 14th tally of the season with 14:02 left
in the second period. That tie was shortlived though as the Hawks
regained the lead with 11:13 left on a power-play score from
Alexa Hingston (Charlestown, Mass.), her third
straight game with a point. The goal was assisted on by sophomore
Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.).
Saint Anselm netminder Andrea Berlin (Durham,
N.H.) turned aside 20 shots in the win, while Mary
Roux (Auburn, Mass.) made 46 saves in the loss.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 21-1-0 overall and remain
perfect in ECAC East play at 17-0-0. New England College falls to
12-9-1 overall and 9-7-1 in league play after being swept in the
regular-season series by the Hawks. Saint Anselm is back in action
on Saturday, February 23rd as the Hawks travel to Rye, N.Y., to
take on Manhattanville at 3 p.m. at the Playland Ice Casino.
