Syracuse, N.Y. (February 16) -- Senior
Chris Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) knocked down eight
three-pointers in an 86-84 overtime loss at Le Moyne on Saturday
afternoon in Northeast-10 play at Ted Grant Court in Syracuse. The
senior guard finished with a team-high 26 points as five Hawks
finished in double figures.
Le Moyne jumped out to an 11-9 lead with 14:19 left in the first
half before Vetrano knocked down a three to give the Hawks a 12-11
lead. The Saint Anselm lead ballooned to as many as nine at 40-31
after a pair of free throws by Branimir Zeko (Mississauga,
Ontario) before the visitors took a 41-34 lead into the
half.
In the opening four minutes of the second half, Saint Anselm
pushed the lead to double digits at 48-38 with 16:13 left after a
three-pointer from freshman Thomas Baudinet (Watertown,
Conn.). The Dolphins had other ideas and chipped away at
that lead to close within one at the midway point of the half on a
three-pointer from Jonathan Joshua. Le Moyne
eventually tied the game at 62-62 with 8:32 left on a free throw
from Laurence Ekperigin before taking the 67-66
lead on another Joshua trifecta with 6:58 remaining. The lead
changed hands four times in the last minutes of the game before the
teams headed into the extra session. Saint Anselm had three chances
in the final 48 seconds of regulation to take the lead, but were
unable to do so.
In the extra session, the hosts scored first as they would never
trail in the overtime. Saint Anselm freshman John Tello
(Ridgefield Park, N.J.) had a pair of baskets in the
period, but it was Le Moyne's Dan Cromwell who
came up big with a trio of blocked shots in the final seconds to
preserve the win. The Hawks had a chance for the win as they
inbounded the ball 0.6 left on the clock, but a Vetrano
three-pointer was off at the buzzer as the Dolphins swept the Hawks
in the regular-season series for the first time since joining the
Northeast-10.
The Hawks were led by 26 points from Vetrano, along with 14
points from Tello, 10 each from Baudinet and Lewis Thompson
(Wall, N.J.) and a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double
from Zeko. Jason Holmes was outstanding for Le
Moyne with 33 points, while Ekperigin had a 25-point, 10-rebound
double-double. Joshua also ended up with 13 points on the evening.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 11-13 overall and 9-11 in the
Northeast-10, while Le Moyne now sits at 13-12 overall and 11-9 in
league play. Saint Anselm is idle until next Saturday when the
Hawks travel to Franklin Pierce for a 3:30 p.m. start in
Rindge, N.H.
