Mass. (December 2)-The Saint
Anselm College men's ice hockey team, led by junior captain
Seth Goodrich's (Salisbury, Vt.) game-winning
goal, opened up their NE-10 Conference play with a 4-1 victory over
the Greyhounds of Assumption College Tuesday night at Buffone Rink.
The Greyhounds hit the scoreboard first as Taylor Larsen
(Blackstone,
Mass.) beat Hawk goalkeeper
Pat Gallagher
(Framingham,
Mass.) to make it 1-0 Assumption
less than two minutes into the game.
Saint Anselm fought back with just four seconds left in the
first period, when senior Matt Lowe
(Stoughton,
Mass.) took a pass from senior
captain Joe Fernald
(Braintree,
Mass.) and freshman
Michael DeVita
(Annandale,
Maryland) to beat Greyhound
netminder Steve Di Domenico
(Lowell,
Mass.) to even the game at one.
Goodrich gave the Hawks the lead eight minutes into the second
period on an assist from Paul Snell
(Groton,
Mass.) to put Saint Anselm on top
2-1.
In the third period, the Hawks added to their lead as
Nick Wheeler
(Nashua,
N.H.) scored on Fernald's second
assist of the night to make it 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Snell
added a power-play goal from sophomore Ryan Butler
(Arlington,
Mass.) and senior Mike
Nunziato (Guilford,
Conn.) with only 25 seconds left
in regulation for the 4-1 NE-10 victory.
The Hawks out shot the Greyhounds 40-24 in the contest and went
1-6 on the power-play while Saint Anselm killed all five of the
Greyhound's man advantage chances.
Di Domenico made 36 saves on 40 shots on goal in the losing
effort, while Gallagher, in his first action of the season, set
aside 23 shots on 24 shots on goal including 10 in the final period
to preserve the win.
Saint Anselm, now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in NE-10 play, returns to
action Friday, December 5th, when they travel to Tufts University
for an ECAC East game at 7 p.m.
