Manchester, N.H. (November 7)-The Saint Anselm
women's ice hockey team opened up the 2008-09 season with a 5-3
victory over the Norwich University Cadets 5-3. The victory was
also the first for Head Coach Kerstin Matthews as
coach of the Hawks.
The Cadets started the scoring in the 1st period, less than
three minutes into the game, when the Hawks turned the puck over in
their own end and Kelsey Cone
(Manchester,
Vt.) passed it to a cutting
Julie Fortier
(Saint-Malachie,
Quebec) who beat Hawk goalie
Carley Berry
(Danvers,
Mass.) to make it 1-0.
The Hawks fought back when Bianca DeSantis
(Georgetown,
Mass.) took a pass from
Bridget Sylvester
(Randolph,
N.J.) and beat Cadet keeper
Cindy Fortin (Quebec
City,
Quebec) on the powerplay to even
the game at 1.
Norwich fired first in the 2nd period when Fortier beat Berry
for the second time of the night to make it 2-1 Cadets. Less than
four minutes later, freshman Molly Corl
(Danvers,
Mass.) scored her first career
collegiate goal to nod the game at 2.
Under a minute later, Norwich was awarded a penalty shot which
was taken by Sarah Scardino
(Stoughton,
Mass.). The shot however was set
aside by Berry to keep the game nodded at 2.
Still in the second period the Hawks continued their comeback,
as Sami Tatu
(Waterford,
Michigan) took a pass from senior
co-captain Sam Rowe
(Chelmsford,
Mass.) for her first collegiate
goal to put Saint Anselm up 3-2.
Early in the third period, Daniella Lyons
(Greene,
Maine) took a pass from DeSantis
to make it 4-2. Freshman Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach,
Calif.) added her first
collegiate goal on a pass from Rowe to make the score 5-2.
Cone added another for the Cadets to narrow the margin to 5-3,
but it was not enough as the Hawks skated on to their first victory
of the season.
Berry made 35 saves in the win for the Hawks, while Fortin made
16 saves in the losing effort.
The win makes the Hawks 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ECAC East
play, while the loss drops Norwich to 0-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in
league action.
The Hawks hit the ice again tomorrow, November 8th, as they will
host Castleton State College at 3 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
