Lady Hawks Defeat St. Mike's 4-1

South Burlington, Vt. (November 14)-The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team improves to 3-0-0 on the year with a 4-1 victory over Saint Michael's College Friday night at Cairns Arena. Senior forward Bianca DeSantis (Georgetown, Mass.) and freshman forwards Molly Corl (Danvers, Mass.) and Sami Tatu (Waterford, Michigan) each had two points in the victory.

The Hawks got the party started, when DeSantis took a pass from Tatu, who beat Purple Knights netminder Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake, N.Y.) to make it 1-0 with just over 13 minutes left in the first period. Just over three minutes later, senior captain Samantha Rowe (Chelmsford, Mass.) received an assist from Corl, for her first goal of the 2008-09 season to extend the Hawks lead to 2-0.

The Purple Knights had a golden opportunity to cut into the Hawk lead with just seconds left in the second period when  Saint Michael's Molly DiMasi (Burlington, Vt.) had a one-on-none breakaway, but was denied by Jen Taylor (Canadaigua, N.Y.) to keep the score as is.

Saint Anselm held that lead until the five and a half minute mark in the third period, when Hawk forward Chelsea Fillingim (Fairbanks, Alaska) beat Goldman off a pass from Brittany Gould (Rosemount, Minnesota) and Tatu to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Thirty seconds later, Corl added another Hawk goal on a pass from Marissa Serafino (Rutland, Vt.) and DeSantis to put the Hawks up four.

The Purple Knights added a late goal, when senior captain Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt.) took a pass from Shannon Murphy (Wellesley, Mass.) and beat Taylor to spoil the Hawk shutout with less than five minutes left in the game.

Taylor had 11 saves in the win for the Hawks and Goldman set aside 22 shots in the losing effort.

Both teams were unsuccessful on the powerplay as Saint Anselm was 0-3 on the night, while Saint Michael's was 0-8 with the advantage.

Saint Anselm returns to action tomorrow, November 15th, as they will travel to M.I.T. for a 3 p.m. start.
