Mass. (November 15)-The Saint
Anselm women's ice hockey team, led by Kelsey Johnson's
(Byefield,
Mass.) two 1st period goals,
defeated M.I.T. 5-3 Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Ice Rink. The
win improves the Hawks to 4-0-0 overall and in league play, while
the loss drops the Engineers to 1-1-0 in overall and in ECAC East.
The Hawks struck first in the 1st period, when senior captain
Samantha Rowe
(Chelmsford,
Mass.) took a pass from
Bianca DeSantis
(Georgetown,
Mass.) and Molly Corl
(Danvers,
Mass.) and beat Rachel
Bowens-Rubin (Loretto,
Minnesota) to put Saint Anselm up
1-0. With just under four minutes left in the first period, a
M.I.T. penalty resulted in powerplay for the Hawks, and Johnson
took a pass from Alexa Hingston
(Charlestown,
Mass.) and Kristen Byrne
(Duxbury,
Mass.) to net her first goal of
the 2008-2009 campaign. Johnson struck again, with only 26 second
left on the clock, for her second of the game to give the Hawks a
3-0 lead.
At the 16:20 mark in the 2nd period, the Engineers hit the
scoreboard when Kameron Klauber
(Carlsbad,
Calif.) put one past Hawk
netminder Carley Berry
(Danvers,
Mass.) to make to cut the lead to
3-1.
Ten minutes later, freshman Cierra Romaldo
(Chuluota,
Fla.) scored the second goal of
her young career, on an assist from classmate Aly Zappen
(Huntington Beach,
Calif.) to put the Hawks up 4-1.
In the 3rd period, Klauber scored two unassisted goals in two
minutes, to make the score 4-3 with only 10 minutes left in
regulation and to give her a hat trick on the afternoon. The Hawks
put the game out of reach though, when sophomore forward
Chelsea Fillingim (Fairbanks, Alaska) beat
Bowens-Rubin for her third goal of the season and a 5-3 victory for
the Hawks.
M.I.T. went 0-4 on the powerplay, while Saint Anselm went 1-7
with the advantage.
Berry made 21 saves after facing 24 shots and picking up her
second victory of the season. Bowens-Rubin faced a relentless Hawks
attack and made 46 saves on 51 shots on goal.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, November 18th, as they will
travel to UMass-Boston for a 7 p.m. ECAC East contest.
