Worcester, Mass. (October 28) -- Despite a
two-goal effort from senior Sam Lamptey (Worcester,
Mass.), the Saint Anselm men's soccer team fell
to Assumption College by a 3-2 final on Tuesday night in the
regular-season finale. The game was a must-win for both teams, as
the Greyhounds advance to the Northeast-10 Tournament for the first
time since 2001.
Lamptey got the Hawks on the board with his 10th goal of the
season at the 30:35 mark as he fired a shot high into the left
corner for the 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, the
Greyhounds tied the game on a goal by Brandon
McGee as his shot was deflected in by a Saint Anselm
defender. Lamptey had another goal in him though to give the Hawks
the lead again as he scored on a lob shot from 50 yards out for his
11th goal of the season and a 2-1 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Jeffrey Swan tied things at
2-2 as he kicked the ball over a diving John Corridan
(Holliston, Mass.) for his second goal of the season. The
game winner for the Greyhounds came with less than 10 minutes in
regulation as Andrew Kroh scored his fourth of the
year for the 3-2 final.
Corridan made three saves for the Hawks in the loss, while
Brendan McCann turned aside eight shots in the
victory.
Saint Anselm completes the season at 6-10-2 overall and 4-7-2 in
Northeast-10 play. Assumption is now 7-6-5 overall and 5-4-4 in
league action.
