(October 18) -- On Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow
Field, the Saint Anselm football team dropped a 56-0 final to
Southern Connecticut in Northeast-10 Conference play.
The Owls jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a 15-yard touchdown
pass from senior Chris Roberts (New Britain,
Conn.) to Chris Bergeski (Mountainside,
N.J.) in the right corner of the end zone with 12:38 left
in the first quarter. After a Hawk punt, SCSU's Jarom
Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) took the ball on the next
possession and ran up the middle for a 37-yard touchdown and a 14-0
lead. Southern added a one-yard TD rush by Craig Toulouse
(Whitefield, Maine) with 2:18 left in the period for a
21-0 lead after one quarter.
On the first possession of the second quarter, Bergeski caught a
four-yard pass in traffic to make the score 28-0 Owls with 12:23
left in the first half. SCSU set up another touchdown on the next
series on a 36-yard run by Toulouse down to the Hawks' 15-yard
line. Sophomore John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine)
capped the drive with a seven-yard score with 8:07 left for the
35-0 lead.
After a turnover by Saint Anselm quarterback Marc Wilson
(Farmington, Conn.) was returned deep into Hawk territory.
On a third down and goal situation at the one yard line, the Hawks
defense came up big as senior defensive back Rob Paradis
(Bristol, Conn.) recovered an Owl fumble to give
possession back to Saint Anselm. Southern Connecticut closed out
the first-half scoring with a one-yard run by Wiechman, his second
of the day, for a 42-0 lead with 1:01 left in the half.
The Owls scored the first touchdown of the third quarter with
9:17 left in the period as Roberts took it in from the nine yard
line on the quarterback keeper for a 49-0 lead. Tahron
Green (Montclair, N.J.) closed out the scoring with an
11-yard scoring run to make it a 56-0 game.
Luke St. Marie (Mill Creek, Wash.) and Wilson
led the Hawks offense on the ground with 74 and 73 yards each,
respectively.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the
Northeast-10, while Southern Connecticut improves to 5-2 overall
and 4-1 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Saturday,
October 25th as the Hawks host Bentley for a 1 p.m. start at
Grappone Stadium.
