Manchester, N.H. (January 9) -- Saint Anselm
continued its perfect start to the season with a 2-0 shutout
of UMass Boston on Wednesday night at Sullivan Arena, the Hawks'
fourth straight shutout victory of the year.
The Hawks got on the board 12:01 into the first period when
senior Lindsey Snow (Amherst, N.H.) fired in her
third goal of the season on a blast from just inside the blue line
for the early 1-0 lead. Assisting on the goal was Arianna
Rigano (Malden, Mass.), her team-leading sixth helper of
the season. That goal would prove to be the lone score of the first
period as the Hawks outshot the Beacons by a 13-6 margin in the
opening stanza.
The teams remained at 1-0 for most of the second period before
Daniella Lyons (Greene, Maine) pushed the lead to
2-0 with her first goal of the season at the 15:46 mark. Assisting
on the score were Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.)
and Arden Lyons (Westford, Mass.). For Johnson,
the assist stretches her point streak to a season-high six games,
dating back to December 1st at Saint Michael's. Saint Anselm
dominated the second period with an 18-8 edge in shots.
Neither team had many quality scoring chances in the third
period as the game ended with the 2-0 final, the sixth shutout of
the year for the Hawks.
Senior netminder Andrea Berlin (Durham, N.H.)
made 25 saves for her seventh victory of the season, while UMass
Boston goalie Jessica Sams (Bellingham, Mass.)
turned aside 39 shots in the loss.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 10-0-0 overall and 7-0-0 in
the ECAC East, while the Beacons drop to 5-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in
ECAC East action. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday, January
11th as the team heads to MIT for a 7 p.m. start in Boston.
