Manchester, N.H. (January 4) -- The Saint
Anselm Hawks and the No. 7 Manhattanville College Valiants recorded
victories on Friday night at Sullivan Arena. The Valiants defeated
Williams, 3-2, in the afternoon game, while the Hawks shutout
Bowdoin, 2-0, in the nightcap.
Saint Anselm vs. Bowdoin
The Saint Anselm Hawks made it eight straight wins Friday evening
defeating Bowdoin, 2-0. Andrea Berlin (Durham,
N.H.) made 16 saves for her third shutout of the season.
The non-conference win keeps the Hawks flawless at 8-0-0, while the
loss drops the Polar Bears to 1-4-1.
After a scoreless first period which saw the Polar Bears control
much of the action with an 8-2 advantage in shots, the Hawks struck
first in the second period. Kelsey Johnson (Byfield,
Mass.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season
at the 8:50 mark on the power play, assisted by Kathleen
Twomey (Londonderry, N.H.). Saint Anselm took the 1-0
advantage into the second intermission.
Just 43 seconds into the third period, Twomey scored her fifth
goal of the season to give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
Brittany Kretzman (Edina, Minn.) assisted on the
goal. The Hawks continued to play solid defense throughout the
third period, keeping the Polar Bears off the board.
The Hawks return to the ice tomorrow hosting Williams at 3 p.m.
Bowdoin takes on Manhattanville at noon.

Williams
After a scoreless first period, Manhattanville jumped out in front
early in the second period, as Shannon Coffey (Malden,
Mass.) scored off a rebound at the 1:28 mark. The goal was
assisted by Danielle Nagymarosi (Uxbridge,
Ontario) and Danielle Mazurek (Eaglesham,
Alberta).
Williams responded at the 10:01 mark on the power play to tie
the score at 1-1. After two shots were stopped by Manhattanville
goaltender, Karina Turmel (Ste-Marguerite,
Quebec), Sam Tarnasky (Caroline, Alberta)
cashed in on the second rebound, going top shelf to beat Turmel.
The goal was assisted by Kat O'Brien (Skaneateles,
N.Y.). The teams went into the second intermission with
the score still knotted at one.
The Valiants took a 2-1 lead when Masurek's one-timer found the
five-hole of Williams goaltender, Denise McCullogh
(Toronto, Ontario), at the 7:31 mark in the third period.
The goal was assisted by Coffey and Nagymarosi. Manhattanville
added an insurance goal at the 13:07 mark, when Nagymarosi found
the back of the net for her third point of the night. Coffey and
Carina von Bredow (Beamsville, Ontario) assisted
on the goal.
The Ephs refused to give in however, as Catherine Mullen
(Farmington, Conn.) scored in a scuffle in front of the
net at the 17:42 mark, making the score 3-2. The goal was assisted
by Lauren Zurek (Plymouth, Minn.). The Ephs did
not manage to net the equalizer, leaving the final score 3-2.
Turmel made 19 saves in the victory, while McCullogh made 23
saves in the loss.
The non-conference win improves Manhattanville to 7-2 overall
and the Valiants now ride a four-game win streak, while the loss
drops the Ephs to 1-6.
Manhattanville takes on Bowdoin tomorrow at Noon at Sullivan
Arena. Following that game, Williams takes on Saint Anselm at 3
p.m.
