Manchester, N.H. (January 25) -- Led by two
goals and an assist from junior Kelsey Johnson (Byfield,
Mass.), the Saint Anselm women's hockey team routed Salve
Regina by a 6-1 final in ECAC East action at Sullivan Arena on
Friday night.
Saint Anselm got on the board at the 8:39 mark when
Kathleen Twomey (Londonderry, N.H.) fired home a
power-play goal from inside the left circle for her 10th goal of
the season. The Hawks struck just 2:21 later to make it 2-0 as
Arianna Rigano (Malden, Mass.) scored on a rebound
for her 10th goal of the season as well and the hosts were firmly
in control. Rigano's goal was assisted on by Rachel Cooke
(Stowe, Vt.) and Bianca DeSantis (Georgetown,
Mass.). Saint Anselm outshot the Seahawks by a commanding
10-2 margin in the opening period.
In the opening minutes of the second period, the Hawks scored
just four seconds into a power play as freshman Chelsea
Fillingim (Fairbanks, Alaska) slid home her second goal of
the season and the 3-0 lead. At the 16:36 mark of the period,
DeSantis scored a beautiful goal as she took a crossing pass from
Rigano and gave the Hawks a 4-0 advantage. The hosts added to that
just 1:01 later as Johnson fired a shot over the right shoulder of
Salve Regina goalie Lauren Barella (Lennon,
Mich.).
Johnson closed out the scoring for the hosts at the 14:01
mark of the final period with a blast from the point for the 6-0
final and her team-leading 12th goal of the year. The Seahawks got
on the board with just 0.5 seconds remaining as Molly
Golden (Milton, Mass.) scored to make the final 6-1.
Saint Anselm sophomore Jen Taylor (Canandaigua,
N.Y.) turned aside seven shots in the win to improve to
4-0-0 on the season and a perfect 14-0-0 for her career. Barella
made 25 stops in the loss as she falls to 2-2-1 for the season.
With the win, Saint Anselm improves to 15-1-0 overall and 11-0-0
in the ECAC East, while Salve Regina drops to 4-10-1 overall and
