Manchester, N.H. (September 8) -- Edinboro used
a 21-0 first quarter to jump out to a quick lead and defeat Saint
Anselm by a 58-3 final in the season opener for the Hawks at
Grappone Stadium.
Edinboro got on the board with 12:37 left in the opening quarter
as Houston Brown (Westerville, Ohio) scampered
into the end zone from 28 yards out and the Fighting Scots took an
early 7-0 lead. Edinboro pushed the lead to 14-0 with 4:19 left in
the first quarter when Brown hauled in a 17-yard touchdown from
sophomore quarterback Trevor Harris (Waldo, Ohio).
Brown wasn't done with his first-quarter production though as he
scored his third touchdown of the afternoon with 1:59 remaining in
the quarter on a 23-yard TD rush.
Harris hooked up with Kyle Witucki (Tarentum,
Pa.) with 9:52 left in the second quarter for his second
TD pass of the afternoon to give the Fighting Scots a 28-0
advantage. In the closing minutes of the first half, Harris hooked
up with Ryan Rybicki (Covina, Calif.) for a
six-yard TD pass and a 35-0 lead. Saint Anselm got on the board in
the final minute of the half when freshman Dylan McSparren
(Portsmouth, R.I.) booted a 23-yard field goal and the
teams went into the half at 35-3.
The Fighting Scots continued to pick up the offensive yards with
a pair of TD drives early in the second half. Gary Nolen
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) hauled in a seven-yard pass from Harris
and Ulysee Davis (Bryans Road, Md.) scored on a
72-yard touchdown run. Freshman kicker Justin Gomes (Erie,
Pa.) added a 28-yard field goal in the closing minutes of
the third quarter and the visitors took a 51-3 advantage into the
fourth quarter.
Edinboro closed out the scoring with 3:55 remaining in the game
with a 10-yard TD rush from Caleb Mayer (Bennington,
Vt.) for a 58-3 final.
For Saint Anselm, junior Rob Paradis (Bristol,
Conn.) and Chris McMillan (Morisonville,
N.Y.) each finished with 10 tackles to lead the Hawks. For
Edinboro, Harris finished 22-of-29 for 265 yards and four
touchdowns at quarterback. Brown picked up a pair of TD runs, along
with 98 yards on 10 carries.
With the loss, the Hawks are now 0-1 overall, while Edinboro
evens its record at 1-1 on the season. The Hawks are back in action
on Saturday, September 15th when Assumption visits Grappone Stadium
