Manchester, N.H. (August 26) -- On Sunday
afternoon, the Saint Anselm women's soccer team dropped a 2-1
overtime heartbreaker to 19th-ranked Saint Leo in non-conference
action on Melucci Field. The Hawks battled back from a 1-0 deficit
to tie the game in the second half before the visiting Lions poked
home the game winner with just one second left in the first
overtime period.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, with Saint
Anselm having the best chance at scoring as Jennifer Pearl
(Stoughton, Mass.) hit the post on a penalty kick midway
through the opening period. Saint Leo's Hannah
Beard lit up the scoreboard first with an unassisted tally
at the 63:03 mark to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Saint Anselm's
Pearl knotted the score at 1-1 just 11 minutes later with her first
career goal at 74:29.
The two teams headed into the extra period and looked like they
were heading into a second overtime when Kiki Day
scored with just one tick left on the clock for the game-winning
tally. The play was set up by a foul call on Saint Anselm with 20
seconds remaining, giving the Lions a free kick from just inside
the midfield line with 10 seconds left.
Jacqueline Cooney (Braintree, Mass.) took the
loss for the Hawks while turning aside three Saint Leo shots.
Lauren Hudson improved to 1-1-0 with a four-save
performance.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-1-0 overall on the season,
while Saint Leo returns home with a 1-1-0 record after a two-game
New Hampshire trip. Saint Anselm is back in action on Friday night
when the team travels to Southern Connecticut for its Northeast-10
opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
