Manchester, N.H. (December 4) -- Led by
Ryan Butler's (Arlington, Mass.) hat trick and
Paul Snell's (Groton, Mass.) playmaker, the men's
hockey team picked up its first Northeast-10 conference victory
Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena with a 7-2 win over Assumption. The
win improves the Hawks to 2-0-3, 1-0-0 Northeast-10, while the loss
drops the Ice Dogs to 5-6-0, 0-3 in league play.
Assumption struck first as Sean Staid (Peabody,
Mass.) found the top left corner at the 3:52 mark,
assisted by Michael Dwyer (Somerville, Mass.) and
Derek Whitney (Scituate, Mass.). The Ice Dogs held
the lead until Tom Kerwin (Whitman, Mass.) scored
a power play goal at the 14:46 mark, assisted by Seth
Goodrich (Salisbury, Mass.) and Mike Nunzianto
(Guilford, Conn.). The teams headed into the first
intermission knotted at one.
Saint Anselm poured on the shots in the second period,
controlling the category 15 to 5 over Assumption. Pat
Forshner (Natick, Mass.) found the back of the net at the
8:55 mark, assisted by Jim Toomey (Billerica,
Mass.). Mike Foley (Medford, Mass.) then
danced around the Ice Dogs' defenders, scoring a spectacular goal
at the 14:19 mark, assisted by Nick Wheeler (Nashua,
N.H.) and Snell, giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Butler
struck on the power play for his first collegiate goal at the 18:20
mark in the second, assisted by Snell and Kerwin. The Hawks took a
4-1 advantage into the third.
Assumption looked to have some fight left, as Jon
Retelle (Monmouth, Maine) scored on the power play just
one minute into the third period, assisted by Jim Trahon
(Needham, Mass.) and Matt Paget (Hingham,
Mass.), to bring the Ice Dogs within two.
Saint Anselm responded with three unanswered goals to finish off
the Ice Dogs, 7-2. Joe Fernald (Braintree, Mass.)
scored at the 3:42 mark, assisted by Kerwin and John Penny
(Andover, Mass.). Butler then added his second goal at the
7:33 mark, assisted by Shane Masotta (Woburn,
Mass.), and Butler picked up the hat trick on the power
play at the 18:36 mark, assisted by Wheeler and Snell.
The Hawks return to the ice Friday night, hosting New England
College at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
