Manchester, N.H. (December 4) -- Led by Ryan Butler's (Arlington, Mass.) hat trick and Paul Snell's (Groton, Mass.) playmaker, the men's hockey team picked up its first Northeast-10 conference victory Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena with a 7-2 win over Assumption. The win improves the Hawks to 2-0-3, 1-0-0 Northeast-10, while the loss drops the Ice Dogs to 5-6-0, 0-3 in league play.

Assumption struck first as Sean Staid (Peabody, Mass.) found the top left corner at the 3:52 mark, assisted by Michael Dwyer (Somerville, Mass.) and Derek Whitney (Scituate, Mass.). The Ice Dogs held the lead until Tom Kerwin (Whitman, Mass.) scored a power play goal at the 14:46 mark, assisted by Seth Goodrich (Salisbury, Mass.) and Mike Nunzianto (Guilford, Conn.). The teams headed into the first intermission knotted at one.

Saint Anselm poured on the shots in the second period, controlling the category 15 to 5 over Assumption. Pat Forshner (Natick, Mass.) found the back of the net at the 8:55 mark, assisted by Jim Toomey (Billerica, Mass.). Mike Foley (Medford, Mass.) then danced around the Ice Dogs' defenders, scoring a spectacular goal at the 14:19 mark, assisted by Nick Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) and Snell, giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Butler struck on the power play for his first collegiate goal at the 18:20 mark in the second, assisted by Snell and Kerwin. The Hawks took a 4-1 advantage into the third.

Assumption looked to have some fight left, as Jon Retelle (Monmouth, Maine) scored on the power play just one minute into the third period, assisted by Jim Trahon (Needham, Mass.) and Matt Paget (Hingham, Mass.), to bring the Ice Dogs within two.

Saint Anselm responded with three unanswered goals to finish off the Ice Dogs, 7-2. Joe Fernald (Braintree, Mass.) scored at the 3:42 mark, assisted by Kerwin and John Penny (Andover, Mass.). Butler then added his second goal at the 7:33 mark, assisted by Shane Masotta (Woburn, Mass.), and Butler picked up the hat trick on the power play at the 18:36 mark, assisted by Wheeler and Snell.

The Hawks return to the ice Friday night, hosting New England College at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
