Manchester, N.H. (December 15) -- Lewis
Thompson (Wall, N.J.) picked up a double-double with 16
points and 15 rebounds, but the men's basketball team could not
come away with a win on Saturday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium,
falling to Pace, 83-77 in overtime.
The Hawks took an early five point lead when Thompson sunk a
layup to give the Hawks a 10-5 lead, but the Setters answered
quickly taking a seven point lead at the 7:37 mark in the first
half. Capped off by a Ryan Williams (Centreville,
Pa.) three pointer, the Setters went on a quick 9-1 run
spanning from the 6:55 mark to the 5:05 mark, giving the Setters a
29-16 lead 15 minutes into the game.
The Hawks responded with a 16-2 run to end the first half with
several Hawks contributing throughout the run. Saint Anselm took a
32-31 lead with 51 seconds remaining in the first half, with
Chris Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) scoring a
layup to end the run. During the run, Vetrano scored his 1,000th
career point at the 1:59 mark with a jumper. Vetrano is the 42nd
player in Saint Anselm history to score 1,000 points in a career.
The Hawks led by as many as seven in the second half, while the
Setters led by as many as six, with the score staying close
throughout the entire half. The Hawks held the lead from the 9:03
mark until the 3:02 mark, with John Tello (Ridgefield Park,
N.J.) and Thompson doing most of the scoring for the
Hawks, but another Williams three pointer gave Pace the lead,
67-66, with three minutes to play. After a Laurence McGhee
(Linden, N.J.) jumper gave the Setters a three point lead,
Tello responded with a three pointer seconds later to tie the score
at 69-69. Both teams exchanged a pair of layups to end the half,
sending the game into overtime tied at 73-73.
In overtime, Tello picked up the rebound and made a layup to
give the Hawks a two-point lead. Desmond Quincy-Jones (Rye,
N.Y.) sunk a pair of jumpers to give the Setters an 81-75
lead with a minute to play. Williams sealed the game with two free
throws, giving Pace an eight point lead with 21 seconds to play.
For the Hawks, Thompson, Junior Mitchell (Brooklyn,
N.Y.), and Tello all finished with 16 points. Chris
Vetrano finished with 13 points. The loss drops the Hawks to 3-4,
3-3 Northeast-10.
For the Setters, Williams led all scoring with 22 points.
Gibraltar White (Gautier, Mass.) finished with 18
points, while McGhee finished with 14 points. Quincy-Jones had a
double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
The Hawks travel to Bridgeport, Conn. on Tuesday for one of
two games in the Bridgeport Tournament. On Tuesday, the Hawks
square off against Bridgeport at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, the
Hawks play Concordia at 5 p.m.
