Worcester, Mass. (November 25) - The Saint
Anselm men's basketball team couldn't overcome early shooting woes
as the Hawks fell to Assumption on Sunday afternoon by a 75-52
final at Laska Gym in Northeast-10 play.
In the opening half, the Hawks held the lead just once as the
Greyhounds held the visitors to just 26.7 percent shooting from the
field. Assumption wasn't much better though as the Greyhounds
managed just 11-of-34 from the field, a 32.4 percent clip. It was
Assumption though, led by six first-half points from Corey
Diethorn, who took a 27-23 lead into the halftime break.
Senior guard Jeff Dickson (Bedford, N.H.) and
sophomore Branimir Zeko (Mississauga, Ontario)
each finished the first half with four points and five rebounds.
The second half was all Assumption as the hosts led by as many
as 23 before outlasting the Hawks in the victory. The Greyhounds
shot 48.6 percent in the half and used eight second-half
three-pointers to pull away for their seventh win in the last 10
meetings between the two schools. The all-time series now stands at
62-49 in favor of Saint Anselm.
Senior Chris Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) led the
Hawks with 15 points, while Dickson led the team with nine
rebounds. Four Greyhounds finished in double figures, led by
Mitch Bajema with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting
from the field.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-1 overall and in league play,
while the Greyhounds improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the
Northeast-10. Saint Anselm is back in action on Wednesday evening
as the Hawks travel to Bloomfield College for their first
non-conference game of the season.
