Manchester, N.H. (October 6) -- The Saint
Anselm field hockey team kept hopes of making the Northeast-10
playoffs alive with a 2-1 win over the Assumption Greyhounds
Saturday morning at South Athletic Field.
The Hawks came out strong in the first half, pressuring
Greyhound goalkeeper Kaitlin Burke. The
Hawks scored on their first shot of the game as Annie
Heaney (East Kingston, N.H.) put home a Karrie
Muma (N. Falmouth, Mass.) pass at the 7:01 mark. The
Hawks added a second goal late in the first half, as Liz
Tierney (Scituate, Mass.) netted her first goal of the
season at the 31:50 mark.
Assumption tried to make a late comeback as April
Brunelle buried a Sarah Ranieri feed at
the 62:47 mark, making the score 2-1 with less than eight minutes
to play. After a barrage of penalty corners held off by the
Saint Anselm defense, the Greyhounds came up short.
Riley Haddock (Falmouth, Maine) made seven
saves for the Hawks, while Burke made four saves in the losing
effort for the Greyhounds. The win improves the Hawks to 5-8
overall, 5-8 Northeast-10, while the loss drops Assumption to 6-8,
4-7 Northeast-10.
The Hawks return to the field on Wednesday, October
10, traveling to Stonehill for a 7:00 p.m. start.
