Shane Dinagen (Harrisville, R.I./ Burrillville) threw a single game record five touchdown passes including three in a 23-point fourth quarter as Saint Anselm defeated Plymouth State University by a score of 40-14 in a non-conference opener for both school at Grappone Stadium Saturday.
With Saint Anselm (1-0) holding onto a 17-14 lead early in the fourth, Dinagen threw three TD scores to three different receivers in a span of 2:16 to blow the game wide open.
Following a missed 37-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter for Plymouth (0-1), Dinagen drove the Hawks 80 yards in 11 plays, capping things with a two-yard strike to
Pat Turner (N. Andover, Mass./ N. Andover) with 11:23 to go.
On the very next PSU play,
Mark Wysocki (New Britain, Conn./ New Britain) intercepted a pass and returned the ball 19 yards with an additional 15-yards coming on a personal foul call to give the Hawks possession at the PSU 18-yardline. It took just one snap for Dinagen to find
Mike Wojtas (Dracut, Mass./ Dracut) in the endzone for Wojtas' second score of the day.
The Panthers would turn the ball over again the very next time they touched the ball with
David Whitney (S. Berwick, Maine/ Marshwood) forcing PSU's fifth fumble of the day (all turnovers). Dinagen struck 1:25 later finding
Michael Garcarz (New Britain, Conn./ New Britain) on a two-yard pass.
Dinagen finished his day with impressive numbers; 27-for-46 with five TD's (1 INT) and 247 yards through the air. His favorite target was
Kevin Lukas (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill) who had seven catches for 52 yards. Garcarz had five for 58 yards (2 TD, 5 PAT, 28-yard FG), Turner had six receptions for 30 yards, Wojtas had three for 52. Senior RB
Mike Donoghue (Newbury, N.H./ Kearsarge) also had a big day with a career-high 96 rushing yards (16 carries, 6.0 ypc) and 51 receiving yards (5 Rec.).
Plymouth State played well in the first half and took a 14-10 halftime lead after a pair of first half TDs thrown by
Tye Seastredt (Danville, N.H./ Timberlane) before turning the ball over six times, three of them in Saint Anselm territory along with two missed field goals. Seastedt finished his day with 14 completions on 26 attempts for 196 yards. Brad Largy, the reigning ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Year, led the receiving corps with six catches for 83 yards.
On defense, Saint Anselm was led by
Casey Larson (Pascoag, R.I./ UMaine) who ran wild with 3.0 sacks, four QB hurries, three pass breakups, and 3.5 Tackles for a loss all told (14 yards). The Hawks had eight sacks and 14 TFLs on the day. All-NE-10 safety
Brian Sundell (N. Easton, Mass./ Oliver Ames) had a game-high 12 tackles with nine solo efforts.
PSU, which registered just one TFL, was led by
Dan Fallon (Manchester, N.H./ Central) who had eight tackles (seven solo), an interception and two pass breakups.
Saint Anselm returns to action next Saturday when the Hawks host Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference Game of the Week. PSU returns for its home opener against UMass Dartmouth. Both kickoffs are slated for 1:00 PM.
