Plymouth, N.H. (September 4, 2004)—Saint Anselm forced five turnovers and the Hawks shutout Plymouth State by a score of 24-0 in a non-conference season opener for both teams at Currier Field in Plymouth, N.H. Saturday.

The win was the first season opening win for the Hawks since the 2001 campaign.

Saint Anselm started the scoring at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter on a three-yard run from Michael Garcarz (New Britain, Conn./ New Britain) following a five-play, 48-yard drive covering 1:30.

The Hawks then added to their lead on a 77-yard scoring run by All-Northeast-10 Conference back Derek DiMartino (Amherst, N.H./ UMass Amherst), two plays after Mark Wysocki (New Britain, Conn./ New Britain) intercepted a pass in the end zone.

That 14-0 lead would stand up deep into the fourth quarter before Garcarz padded the Hawks' lead with a 22-yard field goal at the 5:21 mark of the fourth. On the ensuing PSU drive, the Hawks recorded three straight tackles for a loss to drive the Panthers into a fourth and 26 deep in their zone. The home squad went for it but Panther WB Tye Seastredt (Danville, N.H.) was pressured by the Hawks David Heiner (Farmington, Conn./ Farmington), and threw a pass that was picked off by Jim Malone (Leominster, Mass./ Leominster), who returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.

Garcarz finished the day as the team's leading receiver with six catches for 58 yards to go along with the 22-yard field goal and three extra points. Shane Dinagen (Harisville, R.I./ Burrilville) completed 14 of 28 attempts for 130 yards while DiMartino finished with 158 yards on 24 carries (6.6 ypc).

Brian Sundell (N. Easton, Mass./ Oliver Ames) led the defense with 13 tackles, 11 of which came before halftime. Aaron Jeanson (Acton, Mass./ URI) finished with 10 tackles. In all, the Hawks recorded 14 tackles for a loss, three sacks, 16 quarterback hurries, and allowed just 69 rushing yards on 50 PSU carries in the game.

For Plymouth, Seastredt finished 14-for-29 for 152 yards (three picks), while Dan Fortier (Salem, N.H.) rushed 16 times for 73 yards.
