C.W. Post Defeats Hawks

Brookville, N.Y. (September 25, 2004)— C.W. Post scored 28 second quarter points as the Pioneers defeated Saint Anselm by a score of 49-14 in a Northeast-10 Conference football game at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y. Saturday.

Saint Anselm turned the ball over eight times, three of them coming after completed passes with C.W. Post returning two miscuess for scores on the day.
C.W. Post improves to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in NE-10 play while Saint Anselm falls to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in conference play.

Turnovers and poor field position cost the Hawks in the first half as the Pioneers built a 35-0 lead before halftime. After starting the game 4-for-15 passing, quarterback Rob Blount got on track, throwing touchdown passes of 54 and 85 yards in a nightmare second quarter for the visitors who committed four turnovers. The last turnover of the half proved especially costly as Damian Gilyard intercepted a screen pass and returned it 45 yards to the Hawks' two-yardline to set up the hosts' fifth score of the day.

Blount passed for 227 yards and ran for 59 more on the ground in the half. In stark contrast, the Hawks managed just 57 yards with the four first half turnovers.
The Hawks got on the board with 10:44 to play in the third on an 11-yard scoring strike from Bobby Lalli (Manassas, Va./ South Carolina) to Kevin Lukas (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill). The play was kept alive by a 33-yard pass from Lalli to Mike Donoghue (Newbury, N.H./ Kearsarge) on a third don play earlier in the drive.

Late in the third, David Heiner (Farmington, Conn. / Farmington) hit Blount as he tried to throw from his own endzone, resulting in an Anthony Barese (Braintree, Mass./ Braintree) interception. Barese returned the ball four yards to the one yardline and one play later, Michael Garcarz (New Britain, Conn./ New Britain) ran the ball one yard for his second rushing score of the year.

Lalli finished the day 11-for-28 for 192 yards and also ran for 20 yards in his first collegiate start at QB. Brian Sundell (N. Easton, Mass./ Oliver Ames) led the defense with a game-high 12 tackles (six solo) while Mike Bombardier (Kingston, Mass./ Silver Lake) had a sack and an interception.

Saint Anselm finished with 265 yards and did hold the Pioneers to 87 yards in the second half. Steve Banks finished with three catches for 109 yards and one touchdown. Blount led the ground game with 64 rushing yards. Joe Gangemi and Peter Lazare each had nine tackles for CWP while Allen Lyons had two interceptions a fumble recovery and a forced fumble in the game.

Saint Anselm returns to action next Saturday when the Hawks host Stonehill College in a 1:00 PM Homecoming game at Grappone Stadium.
