Colonie, N.Y. (November 1, 2003)—Saint Anselm College broke a seven game winless streak with a 23-8 win against Division I-AA Siena College in Colonie, N.Y. on Saturday.

Saint Anselm improves to 1-7 on the year with the win while Siena falls to 0-9 with the loss to extend their winless streak to 11 games dating back to last season.

Saint Anselm received a season-high 154 yards rushing and two first half touchdowns by Derek DiMartino, and the Hawks totaled 190 rushing yards as a team.

The Hawks controlled the ball throughout the first half and took a 17-0 lead into halftime, marking the first time since September 27 against Stonehill that the team has had a lead. The Hawks outgained Siena, 203-63 in the first half, led by 127 rushing yards.

After missing out on two possessions deep in Siena territory, the Hawks converted a 12-play, 47-yard yard drive, capped by a DiMartino one-yard plunge as time expired in the first half.

The defense then gave the Hawks good field position as James Ward forced a fumble on an option play to give his team the ball at their own 45. The Hawks took just two plays to score again when, after a 27-yard reverse by Pat Turner, DiMartino struck again with a 28-yard run along the near side.

The Hawks then added to their score with a 41-yard field goal by Michael Garcarz after a modest four-play drive set up by a big face mask penalty against Siena that gave the Hawks good field position on the Saints' 26 yardline.

The Hawks added to their lead on their first drive of the second half. Getting the ball to start the quarter, Aaron Jeanson took the kick 47 yards to the Siena 38 yardline to set up a career-long 47-yard field goal by Garcarz to give the Hawks a 20-0 lead with 12:56 to play.

Towards the end of the first half, Michael DeMasi picked off a pass at the Hawks' 41-yardline, and the Hawks marched 53 yards on seven plays to set up a 23-yard field goal by Garcarz. The interception was the fourth of the season for DeMasi, and it gave him 10 for his career to set a new school mark.

The shutout bid ended in the fourth quarter for Saint Anselm however, as he Saints covered 45 yards on two plays with a 35-yard pass and a 10-yard scoring run by Sal Jeraci with 4:44 remaining. The Saints' two-point conversion was good, cutting the lead to 23-8 but the home team would not get any closer as Kevin Ridgley recovered an onside kick and the Hawks ran out the clock.
