Saint Anselm Gets Into Win Column

Hawks Hand Assumption 15th-Straight NE-10 Loss, 38-13

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore running back Derek DiMartino (Amherst, N.H. /UMass Amherst) accounted for 244 yards of all-purpose offense (26 rushes for 157 yards and five receptions for 87 yards) and scored two touchdowns to lead Saint Anselm College past Assumption College, 38-13, in a Northeast-10 Conference game Saturday at Rocheleau Field.

The Hawks defense also played a prominent role in the victory with three fumble recoveries, three interceptions, five quarterback sacks by five different players, and holding the Hounds to a mere one-for-nine on third-down conversions.

Sharing the spotlight in a game loaded with individual highlights were senior quarterback Keith Comeau (Marblehead, Mass. /Marblehead) who completed 18-of-27 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns and senior wide out Travis Pelletier (Deerfield, N.H./Central) who caught six passes for 50 yards including touchdowns of 11 and 17 yards. The Hawks had 479 yards of total offense while controlling the clock 36:44 to 23:16.

Sophomore running back James Bucci (Johnston, R.I./ Johnston) registered the fifth-best all-purpose game in Greyhounds' history with 284 yards (16 rushes for 108 yards and nine receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns (69 and 43 yards)). Last week Bucci had 241 yards of all-purpose offense with 90 yards rushing and nine catches for 144 yards (over two weeks he has 525 yards of all-purpose with 198 yards rushing and 18 receptions for 320 yards.)

Hounds' sophomore quarterback Ryan Bonnyman (Mansfield, Mass./ Mansfield) completed 16-of-27 passes for 237 yards and two scores, despite being sacked five times.

Defensively, junior cornerback James Blanchard (Worcester, Mass./ Holy Name) was spectacular with 13 tackles including nine solos, three break-ups and a fumble recovery. Freshman cornerback John Connell (Mansfield, Mass./ Mansfield) also had 13 tackles (4 solos), while senior punter Ttim Longdon (Holden, Mass./ St. John's) punted five times for a 42.8 average including a 53-yarder.

The Hawks marched on the opening series 61 yards in five plays with DiMartino finishing with a three-yard burst off left tackle for the touchdown. A 36-yard pass from Comeau to junior wide out Matt Santiago (Clinton, Mass./ Clinton) highlighted the march.

The Greyhounds came right back to tie as Bonnyman found Bucci over the middle on a 43-yard touchdown pass. Bonnyman also threw to sophomore tight end Josh Howlett (Wilmington, Mass./ Wilmington) for 14 yards and to junior wide out R.J. Coleman (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois Central) for 11 yards.

Senior end Lance Flagg (Simsbury, Conn./ Bridgton Acad.) recovered a fumble on the second play of the next series setting the Hawks up at the Hounds 17. On the second play Comeau drilled a scoring strike to Pelletier. Senior placekicker Erol Senel (S. Euclid, Ohio/ Benedictine) kicked the conversion for a 14-7 lead.

An interception by senior defensive back Aaron Jeanson (Acton, Mass./ Acton-Boxboro) set up a 33-yard field goal by Senel four minutes later and a 17-7 first-period lead.

A 13-yard touchdown run by DiMartino put Saint Anselm in command, 24 7, at halftime.
In the fourth period Comeau found Pelletier on an 11-yard touchdown strike and freshman Mike Donoghue (Newbury, N.H./ Kearsarge Reg.) scored on a one-yard plunge, his first collegiate score. Bucci scored for Assumption on a 69-yard pass from Bonnyman.
