AIC Downs Saint Anselm, 33-17

Hawks Hang Tough, Yellow Jackets Tougher

Manchester, N.H. (September 15, 2001)-The Saint Anselm football team hung tough against the two-time defending EFC champion AIC Yellow Jackets but succumbed by a final score of 33-17 in front of 1,527 fans in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Grappone Stadium on Saturday.

Saint Anselm falls to 1-2 overall, 1-2 in NE-10 play with a pivotal game coming next week. AIC improves to 2-0 overall, 2-0 in NE-10 play.

AIC gained over 460 yards, 290 through the air while scoring in each quarter of the game. All-conference wideout Makis Murphy (Hempstead, N.Y./ Hempstead) led the Jackets' air attack with seven catches for 120 yards and one touchdown.

AIC quarterback Tom Guy (Waldick, N.J./ Fairlawn) also hooked up with Keith Lessner (Revere, Mass./ Revere) on a 99-yard catch and run touchdown pass, as Lessner made a spectacular one-handed catch down the sideline. The pass play set an AIC record for longest passing play from scrimmage, surpassing the old mark of 94 yards set against Bentley in 1998.

Guy finished the day with 290 yards on just 14 completions (20.7 yards per completion) and two touchdowns.

Each team turned the ball over five times but AIC turned three of those turnovers into 20 points while the Hawks capitalized for just three points off AIC turnovers. Seven points came on a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior linebacker Royston Jordan (Brroklyn, N.Y./ Sheepshead Bay) in the third quarter, turning a six point advantage into a 12 point lead, 26-14. Jordan recorded two INTs on the day.
