Saint Anselm Ends Season With Loss

Hawks Handled By Southern, 41-14

New Haven, Conn. (November 10, 2001)- Junior quarterback John Esquivel threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to help Southern Connecticut State University to a 41-14 win over Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Esquivel had an efficient afternoon, completing 14 of 18 passes for 196 with no interceptions. He threw scoring passes of 12 and seven yards to wide receiver Jeff Cupe and also ran one yard for a touchdown as Southern closed out its season with a 6-4 won-lost record.

The Owls' running game accounted for 336 yards on the afternoon as tailbacks Darrin Davis and Kofi Wilson each ran for more than 100 yards. Davis, a junior, carried 25 times for 154 yards, finishing the season with 1, 093 yards and 14 touchdowns after scoring on runs of 68 and one yard.

Wilson, a freshman, carried 16 times for 119 yards.

Senior fullback Nate Rogan also scored a touchdown Saturday on a 19 yard run for Southern, which amassed 532 total yards.

Saint Anselm, which finishes the season at 5-5, got touchdowns from senior Jeff Farragher (Clinton, Mass./ Clinton), on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Keith Comeau (Marblehead, Mass./ Marblehead), and on a 29-yard run by senior tailback Jon Turner (Foxboro, Mass./ Foxboro).

Turner carried 17 times for 101 yards but the Hawks gained just 89 yards on 28 carries as a team. Comeau finished the day 21-for-38 with 207 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Farragher led the team with a season-high seven catches for 81 yards.

In all, Southern racked up 532 yards of offense, averaging 7.0 yards per play. Despite an ineffective day as a unit, linebackers Matt Horgan (Salem, Mass./ Salem) and Geoff Raby (Attleboro, Mass./ Attleboro) had good days with Horgan registering a game-high 14 tackles (10 solo) and Raby recording eight tackles, two of which came for a loss.
