MANCHESTER, NH (Oct. 28) --
Jon Turner's (Foxboro, Mass.) one yard run on fourth and goal with 6:12 to play pushed Saint Anselm to their third straight come from behind victory as they nipped Siena College 20-16 this afternoon at Saint Anselm.
The Division II Hawks upset the Division I-AA Saints to win their third straight game as they improved to 4-4 after an 0-3 start to the season. Siena dropped to 1-6 on the season.
A stiff and steady 25-30 mile per hour wind that swept from north to south proved to become a major factor in the outcome as neither team was successful moving the ball into the head wind. Saint Anselm scored 13 fourth quarter points with the wind to their backs coming back from a 14-0 first quarter deficit. Saint Anselm trailed 16-7 at the end of the third quarter.
It was also the third straight game in which Saint Anselm gave up a touchdown in the first five minutes only to come back and win.
For the first time in five outings, Saint Anselm was held to under 100 yards rushing. Turner lead the Hawks with 19 carries for 50 yards. Kevin Ridgely (Amesbury, Mass.) added 14-47.
Kevin L'Ecuyer (Fitchburg, Mass.) caught an 11 yard touchdown pass from
Keith Comeau (Marblehead, Mass.) in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-7 and Ridgely added an eight yard run to cut the lead to 16-14 early in the fourth.
Both quarterbacks struggled in the wind. Saint Anselm's Comeau finished 10-31 for 102 yards with a touchdown and interception. Siena quarterback Don Record (Cambridge, NY) was 10-19 for 48 yards.
Siena jumped ahead just 1:41 into the game thanks in part to the weather. After Saint Anselm went three and out, Siena blocked a
Jeff Dandurand punt that was recovered in the end zone by Jim Monaco for a 7-0 advantage.
Julian Brown (Carmel, NY), who led Siena on the ground with 135 yards on 32 carries, scored later in the quarter from three yards out for a 14-0 advantage.
Siena finished the game out gaining Saint Anselm 240-201 in total net yardage and first downs, 13-12. But with the difficult wind conditions, both teams utilized many fourth down situations. There, Saint Anselm excelled, converting four of six attempts, while Siena did not convert a fourth down attempt on seven tries.
Defensively, Justin Ferrris (West Haven, Conn.) led Siena with a game high 12 tackles (nine solo).
Ryan Gazzola (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished as the high man for Saint Anselm with 11 tackles, while Zack Lord (Manchester, NH) added 10 (eight solo).
Matt Savino (Midlothian, Va.) notched his team leading seventh sack of the season, while
Will St. Jean added another.
Saint Anselm travels to Stonehill College next Saturday to meet the Chieftains beginning at 12:00 p.m.
