Sara McCarthy is in her second season as a student assistant coach for the Saint Anselm field hockey team after playing for the team for two seasons.
In 2016, McCarthy was part of the best season in program history, as the Hawks posted a 17-5 overall record, while going 10-2 in the NE10 to earn the regular season championship. The team parlayed that into its first NE10 Championship appearance, first NCAA Tournament berth and first showing in the national semifinals. As a member of the coaching staff, McCarthy helped coach three NFHCA All-Americans in Elizabeth Alie, Katherine Sears and Erin Collins, while freshman Hannah Friend was named to the Synapse Sports All-Freshman Team. Alie was named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Year, while Sears earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors in the league.
In the two seasons, McCarthy started seven times in the midfield in 2015 after being sidelined due to injury for the entire 2014 season. She also missed the second half of the 2015 season with an injury before becoming a student assistant coach.
McCarthy transferred to Saint Anselm during the second semester of her freshman year after attending Sacred Heart University, where she played club field hockey for one semester.
Prior to attending Sacred Heart, McCarthy played four years of varsity field hockey at North Andover High School and was also the captain of the softball team for two years. She was also a member of the National Honor Society in high school.
McCarthy is majoring in nursing at Saint Anselm.
