Softball Falls to Adelphi in First Round of NE10 Playoffs

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The No. 2 seed Saint Anselm College softball team dropped both games to No. 7 seed Adelphi in the opening round of the Northeast-10 (NE10) Championship on Tuesday. In game one, the Panthers pulled away after a big fourth inning to earn an 8-4 win. Game two followed a similar script – the Hawks rallied to tie the game in the third, but Adelphi once again took control in the fourth and held on for a 6-4 victory to advance to the NE10 Semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Adelphi took the lead in the top of the third inning. Julianna Sanzone hit a two-run double to right field to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
  • Saint Anselm answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) blasted a two-run home run to left-center field and junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) followed with a solo shot to left, making it back-to-back home runs and giving the Hawks a 3-2 edge.
  • Adelphi kept the offense rolling in the fourth and retook the lead as Courtney Murphy delivered a two-run triple to right-center. Murphy later scored on an error, extending the Panthers' advantage to 5-3.
  • Arsenault stayed hot for Saint Anselm in the fifth with her second home run of the game – a solo shot – to cut the deficit down to just a run.
  • Ellen Tarjan opened the sixth inning with a double and came around to score on an error to add an insurance run for the Panthers. Singles by Angelina Kellogg and Sanzone drove in two more runs and stretched the lead to 8-4.
  • The Hawks were unable to generate a base runner in their final two innings at the plate as the Panthers took game one by a final score of 8-4, forcing a winner-take-all game two.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):
  • Saint Anselm scored four runs on seven hits. The Hawks drew one walk, left four runners on base, and committed three errors in the field.
  • Adelphi scored eight runs on eight hits. They drew six walks and left seven runners stranded without committing an error defensively.
  • Sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) started in the pitching circle for the Hawks and went 3.1 innings. Ryan allowed two hits and four earned runs while recording one strikeout.
  • Senior Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) closed out the game for the Hawks, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. She surrendered just one hit and one walk while striking out two.
  • Arsenault recorded her second two-home-run game of the season. All four of her home runs this season have come in those two games.
  • Reitmeyer launched her team-leading sixth home run of the year for the Hawks.
  • Senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) tallied two hits in the game, marking her team-best 14th multi-hit performance of the season.
  • Sanzone led the Panthers with two hits and three RBIs. Murphy contributed with two hits and two RBIs for the visitors.
  • This marked the 33rd meeting between Saint Anselm and Adelphi, with the Panthers improving to 18-14-1 in the all-time series.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Adelphi wasted no time and struck quickly in the top of the first inning. A two-run homer by Courtney Wengryn gave the Panthers an early lead in the decisive game two.
  • The visitors extended their lead in the second, plating a run on a single by Murphy and adding another on a groundout by Zee Zee Shreter to build a 4-0 advantage.
  • Saint Anselm responded in the bottom of the third with a four-run rally. Sophomore Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.) started the frame with a leadoff home run, the first of her career. Later in the inning, Wiberg scored on an error before senior Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) drove in Arsenault with a single. The comeback was capped with an RBI double by sophomore Caitlyn Duquette (Bedford, N.H.) that tied the game at 4-4.
  • The Panthers quickly reclaimed the lead in the top half of the fourth, as Shreter came home on a sacrifice fly by Sanzone. The Panthers tacked on another run after a single from Brianna Pearson, giving them a two-run cushion.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Saint Anselm put runners on second and third with two outs, but they failed to tie the score. Adelphi completed the sweep with a 6-4 win to advance to the NE10 Semifinals.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2):
  • Saint Anselm scored four runs on eight hits. They walked three times and left eight runners on base while playing error-free in the field.
  • Adelphi scored six runs on 11 hits. They drew two walks and also left eight runners stranded while committing one error defensively.
  • Ryan pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Hawks, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
  • Arsenault extended her on-base streak to 10 games, the longest active streak on the team.
  • Trisket's home run marked the first of her career and was her first career extra-base hit as well. She was also the only Hawk with multiple hits in the game.
  • Plue earnd the win in the circle for Adelphi after tossing 3.2 innings. She allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
  • Wengryn led the Panthers with two RBIs, while three Panthers recorded multi-hit games.
  • This was the 34th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Adelphi, with the Panthers improving to 19-14-1 in the series and 3-1 against the Hawks in postseason play.
