Softball Falls Twice on the Road Against Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Saint Anselm softball dropped a pair of games on the road against Assumption. The Greyhounds took game one, 6-1, behind a three-run third inning before staging a final-inning comeback in game two to win 4-3 in extra innings.

  • Softball gears up for their home opener as they host Franklin Pierce on Friday, April 4th. The doubleheader will begin with game one at 2:00 PM, followed by game two at 4:00 PM.


 

GAME 1

 

Score: Saint Anselm 1, Assumption 6 (7 inn.)

Win: Waldron (5-2) Loss: Ryan (8-2)

Date: Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • The Greyhounds struck first in the bottom of the first, with Kaitlyn Cahill driving a ball to the right field wall and racing around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

  • The Hawks got the run back in the third inning with an RBI double from senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.), scoring sophomore Madeline Trisket (Binghamton, N.Y.), who had walked to start the inning.

  • Assumption would get their own RBI double in the bottom of the inning, with Maddy Bland sending home Cahill for the go-ahead run. They would add two more runs on an RBI sacrifice fly from Molly Green and an RBI groundout from Kaylee Lacomb.

  • The lead would move to 5-1 in the fourth, with a sacrifice fly by Cahill scoring Alyssa Johnson.

  • Another run would be added in the sixth, as Cahill scored on a fielder's choice to give the Greyhounds a 6-1 lead, a lead that would become final an inning later, as Assumption picked up the win in game one.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1): 

  • This marked the 50th meeting between the two programs, with Assumption improving to 22-28 in the all-time series. The win marked the second straight in the series for the Greyhounds.

  • Kaelin Waldron secured the win, pitching seven innings and allowing only three hits, three walks, and one earned run.

  • Sam Wiberg had the lone extra-base hit and RBI for the Hawks.

  • Sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) recorded a stolen base, her ninth in the last four games.

  • Madeline Trisket had two of the Hawks' three walks, coming around to score the team's only run.

  • Sophomore Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) pitched 2.2 hitless innings of relief, allowing one earned run and four walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • After three scoreless innings to start the game, Saint Anselm opened the scoring with a single from sophomore Sarah Cipriani (Woodbury, Conn.), bringing home freshman Zaynah Wotkowicz (Hampton Falls, N.H.) and sophomore Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

  • Another run was added in the fifth inning when senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) scored off an RBI single by junior Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.).

  • After six scoreless innings for the Greyhounds, Assumption found their offense in the bottom of the seventh to stay alive. A pair of throwing errors allowed Alyssa Johnson to score, and a double from Maddy Bland cut the deficit to one. A wild pitch then scored Naomi Cohen, completing the comeback and tying the game.

  • Following a scoreless top of the eighth, Assumption walked off in extra innings. It started with a two-out triple by Raigan Gregoire, who scored the winning run on a double by Johnson.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2): 

  • This marked the 51st meeting between the two programs, with Assumption improving to 23-28 in the all-time series. It was their third straight win in the series and their sixth in the last eight meetings.

  • Paige Cote earned the win, pitching the final three innings and allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two batters.

  • Senior Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) pitched all 7.2 innings for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs and recording three strikeouts.

  • Senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) collected two hits and added a stolen base, her team-high 21st of the season and the 41st of her career. With that steal, she moved past Kate Irwin '23 into fourth all-time in program history.

  • Sam Wiberg reached base three times with two hits and a walk. She has now recorded a hit in 16 of the 21 games she has started.
