MELBOURNE, FL – Saint Anselm softball dropped two close games in their return to action at the Space Coast games. They started with a tough 3-0 loss against Eckerd, then followed that up with an extra-innings game vs UT Dallas, ultimately falling 7-6 in the eighth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

The Tritons struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs off a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded walk.

Eckerd extended its lead in the fifth, capitalizing on another bases-loaded walk to make it a 3-0 game.

Julia Heter capped off a dominant performance in the circle, shutting out the Hawks to earn her eighth win of the season.

This matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Julia Heter earned the win, pitching all seven innings while allowing just two hits and one walk, striking out 12.

Sophomore Kendra Lee (Endicott, N.Y.) got the start for Saint Anselm, delivering 5 1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts and just one earned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

The Hawks opened the scoring in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. Freshman Katie Fox (Dracut, Mass.) put Saint Anselm on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field, followed by a run-scoring single from senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

UT Dallas responded in the third inning in similar fashion, as Mikayla Hoffman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Sarah Olenick followed with an RBI single to even the score at 2-2.

Saint Anselm regained the lead in the fifth when senior Audrey Arsenault (Stow, Mass.) singled home Wiberg from second base.

The Comets quickly answered in the sixth with an RBI double from Claire Pollack, once again tying the game.

The Hawks surged ahead in the bottom of the sixth, as Wiberg drove in two runs with a single before coming around to score on a triple by sophomore Brooke Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.), making it 6-3.

UT Dallas responded immediately in the seventh. A two-run double from Avery Martin and an RBI single from Addison Caddell tied the game at 6-6, sending it into extra innings.

In the eighth, the Comets took their first lead of the game as Pollack drove in the automatic runner from second with a single to go up 7-6.

Saint Anselm managed to get a runner to third in the bottom half but couldn't find the tying run, ultimately falling in extra innings.

This marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs, with a rematch scheduled for tomorrow at 12:15 PM.

Allison Koch earned the win for UT Dallas, pitching 5 2/3 innings in relief while allowing four earned runs and striking out seven.

Sophomore Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) started for Saint Anselm, delivering seven innings while allowing five earned runs.

Offensively, senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) led the way for the Hawks, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
