HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After some back and forth play over the first few possessions, Saint Anselm secured the first goal of the game. Sophomore Lucy Mawn (Harwich, Mass.) set up sophomore Alyssa Hill (Brookline, N.H.) as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead five minutes in.
  • Not long after, Southern Connecticut State responded with consecutive goals just over a minute apart to jump in front. Anna Meserve and Macy Vail each scored to put the Owls ahead, 2-1.
  • The Hawks continued to generate scoring opportunities, but failed to convert on a couple of free-position chances against Owls goaltender Caelan Connors, who made six saves in the first quarter.
  • The Owls extended their lead to 3-1 on the second goal of the game by Meserve late in the period, but Hill found senior Kendra Sabotka (Rutland, Vt.) for a shot and score with three seconds left on the clock as the Hawks trailed by a goal entering the second.
  • Saint Anselm added two more goals early in the second quarter. Senior Abigail Christmas (Elmira, N.Y.) and sophomore Caitlin Walsh (Chelmsford, Mass.) both found the back of the net to put the visitors back in the lead, 4-3.
  • Midway through the second, Southern Connecticut State answered with a pair of free-position goals within a 39-second window. Amelia Mansfield and Allie Welder each scored, which helped the Owls regain a one-goal lead.
  • After calling a timeout, Saint Anselm bounced back with three goals before the end of the half. Christmas, Hill, and Sabotka all scored their second goals of the game under two minutes apart and the Hawks held a 7-5 advantage at halftime.
  • The second half was a defensive battle with the Owls wreaking havoc and forcing turnovers. That allowed them to generate some momentum and at the offensive end, they hit the post and forced three saves by Hawks senior netminder Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.).
  • With under six minutes left in the third, Maddox Burton scored for Southern Connecticut State to cut the deficit to 7-6. Burton then set up Allie Palmer for the game-tying goal less than two minutes into the fourth.
  • The two teams traded scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of regulation. Connors made five stops in the cage for the Owls, including one with 15 seconds left. Driscoll came up big at the other end for the Hawks and denied a free-position shot by Palmer with 3:30 remaining.
  • With the score still deadlocked at 7-7 after 60 minutes, the game entered overtime. Just over a minute into the extra segment, senior Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.) sent a pass into the slot for Rowley, who turned and fired a shot into the bottom left corner to send Saint Anselm home with an 8-7 victory.
