HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Western Oregon got on the board in the first inning as Aaliyah Gaboriault drew a walk, advanced to third on a throwing error following a fielder's choice, and then came around to score on a passed ball.
  • The scoring continued in the second inning as the Wolves were able to load the bases with only one out. Gaboriault again put a run on the board, this time with her bat as she hit an RBI single to left field. A wild pitch scored Madelynne Hommel from third, and Western Oregon added two more runs off a single from Isabelle Lewis, which gave them a 5-0 lead through two innings.
  • After scoreless frames in both the third and fourth, the scoring resumed in the top of the fifth. Senior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Cipriani (Woodbury, Conn.) both walked to start the inning for Saint Anselm and Tardugno came around to score after a pair of wild pitches. Cipriani then scored after a throwing error that made it a 5-2 game.
  • Western Oregon responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. RBI singles by Jenna Bixler and Kate Ronning and a sacrifice fly by Gaboriault gave the Wolves an 8-2 lead heading into the final two innings.
  • Saint Anselm was able to get a runner as far as second base in the top of the seventh, but were unable to bring her home and ultimately fell by a final score of 8-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):
  • Senior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) had two of the Hawks' three hits in the game.
  • Freshman Alexa Salafia (Sandown, N.H.) ended with four innings of relief work for Saint Anselm, allowing only five hits and not allowing an earned run in the pitching circle.
  • Half of the runs scored by each team in the game were unearned. Four unearned runs were scored by the Wolves, and one of the Hawks' runs was unearned.
  • This was the second ever meeting between these two programs, who now have a 1-1 record all-time. Saint Anselm won the first meeting in February of 2020, 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • After nine straight outs to start the game, senior Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) became the first base runner of the afternoon for Saint Anselm with a single in the bottom of the second inning. The Hawks loaded the bases after an error and another single, and with two outs in the inning, junior Lily Mason (Derry, N.H.) drew a walk to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Davenport remained hitless until the fourth inning, when Savanna Disbrow secured the first hit and the first run of the game for the Panthers with one swing of the bat. Darby Kramp followed that up with the second home run of the inning as the Panthers went back-to-back to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth as Mason singled to lead off the inning. She was soon joined on base by sophomore Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.), and both came around to score when Wiberg delivered a clutch double that allowed Saint Anselm to regain the lead, 3-2.
  • Sophomore pitcher Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.) put the finishing touches on the win and her complete game for the Hawks by holding the Panthers to just two hits over the final two innings. Saint Anselm held on to secure their third win of the season, 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2):
  • Mason finished the game with a hit, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Ryan pitched all seven innings for Saint Anselm and allowed six hits and two runs while striking out three batters. It was her second complete game win of the season, with her first coming against Saint Cloud State on February 28th.
  • This was the fifth all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Davenport. The Hawks improve to 2-3 in the series against the Panthers that began in 2012, when Saint Anselm last won. This also marked the third game of the series to be decided by only one run.
