HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first quarter of the first conference game of the season, the visitors of Adelphi struck first at the 12:09 mark with Lana Mignon de Wet scoring for the Panthers. The Hawks had a handful of scoring opportunities in the remainder of the quarter, but were unable to convert.
  • Saint Anselm maintained the majority of possession in the second quarter, earning three penalty corners and ripping several shots towards the Adelphi cage. Moments before the end of the period, the home team equalized with sophomore Meghan Smith (Uxbridge, Mass.) feeding junior Marissa Politano (Acton, Mass.) out in front to make it 1-1.
  • In the third quarter, the Panthers came out firing, registering a shot in the first 25 seconds and a shot and score about one minute later. A crossing pass from Jillian Riche set up Adelphi's Amanda Lee for the score to put them ahead, 2-1.
  • Saint Anselm responded right away by earning four corners and recording four shots, but could not find the back of the cage as the third quarter ended with Adelphi in the lead.
  • In the final quarter of the game, the Hawks quickly ripped two shots and forced the Panthers into an illegal position, giving the home team a penalty stroke opportunity. Sophomore Laurentien van den Akker (Geldrop, The Netherlands) stepped in and delivered for Saint Anselm from the penalty spot to even the score at 2-2.
  • The Hawks saw six more corners in the quarter, but were unable to deliver another score. The game was looking to be headed for overtime until Mignon de Wet provided the go-ahead goal with 25 seconds left in the game off a penalty corner. The Panthers sealed the win after watching the remaining time run off the clock.
