Softball Splits Conference Twinbill with Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm College softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) doubleheader against The College of Saint Rose on Saturday at the Cathy Haker Field. The Hawks improved to a 6-6 league record winning five of their last six conference games while the Golden Knights are now 8-8 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • Junior Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) and freshman Jamie Calkins (Charlton, Mass.) each posted a single to open game one but the Hawks left two on base to end the inning. Senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) started strong for Saint Anselm after striking out the top of the Golden Knight's order.
  • Both teams struggled at the plate as freshman Katie Tournas (Fairfield, Conn.) and Calkins each tallied the only two hits in the following three innings. Hicks also recorded another three punchouts for the Hawks to keep the Golden Knights searching for their first hit of the game.  
  • Saint Rose put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs on the scoreboard. Abby Behrikis grounded out to Calkins to retire the side and keep the score deadlocked at 0-0.
  • Caputo got the bats going in the top of the sixth for Saint Anselm with a double to right center. After Calkins walked to put a pair of Hawks on base, sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) singled to right field to score Caputo before Calkins capitalized on an error to tag home and give Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead.
  • Madison Chandler doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Golden Knights, the first hit of the game for the home team, but Hicks struck out Marin Frazee
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm posted two runs off six hits while Saint Rose only recorded one hit and two errors in the opening game.
  • Both teams produced a double each for an extra-base hit as well as one stolen base.
  • Reitmeyer tallied the only RBI for the Hawks after going 1-for-2 at the plate. Caputo and Calkins each recorded two hits and one run while Tournas picked up her fourth hit of the season.
  • Hicks earned her 13th win on the mound for Saint Anselm after pitching a no-hitter through 6.2 innings before giving up a late hit in the bottom of the seventh. She picked up her second shutout win of the season and struck out seven Golden Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard first thanks to an RBI single from Katelyn Baker to give the home team an early 1-0 edge in the bottom of the second.
  • The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth as junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) single to left field to advance senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) to second base. Sophomore Kylie Frank (Hampstead, N.H.) drove in a run off a single to center field, scoring Ramer to tie the game up at 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Rose answered with Baker hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Chandler home and regain a 2-1 lead over Saint Anselm. Senior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled to left center in the top of the sixth for Saint Anselm to put the tying run in scoring position, but the Hawks couldn't capitalize.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Saint Rose tacked on a late run with Nayana DeAmelia picking up an RBI single to right field to score Baker and take a two-run advantage heading into the final inning.
  • Tardugno started the top of the seventh with a walk before advancing to second base off a ground out by pinch hitter sophomore Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.). The Golden Knights however retired the side with a ground out to third base to secure the second-game win by a final score of 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Rose produced three runs off seven hits while Saint Anselm recorded one run off three hits along with one error.
  • The Golden Knights posted two doubles for extra-base hits in comparison to the Hawks with one double. Both teams snagged one stolen bases in the game.
  • Three different Hawks tallied one hit with Frank going 1-for-3 with the lone RBI while O'Hara picked up a double.
  • Junior Sophia DiPippo (Cranston, R.I.) threw the entire seven innings for Saint Anselm allowing one earned run off three hits and striking out two batters.
